Skipper Sagun Kamat
recently became the first Goan cricketer to score a triple century with an
unbeaten 304 runs, thus propelling the Goan team to a score of 606 for 6
against the opposing team in a Ranji trophy match. Sagun says that he is happy
to achieve this feat and that it is a proud moment for him as well as the team.
“I played this game with a lot of patience. In a way, I surprised myself
and this has been a marathon of sorts for me. It’s all about hard work. I have
played this game for many years now. I have always wanted to perform well as a
test batsman, and a good test batsman scores big hundreds. So I’ve worked hard
for these big hundreds,” asserts Sagun. Being the captain of the Goa team,
he is the eighth Ranji captain to score a triple century, joining the elite
list of former cricketers such as Vijay Merchant and Sunil Gavaskar.
Although his feat is
unparalleled to any other, the skipper is humble and says that he would be
happy if he could take things ahead from this point and looks forward to many
performances such as this in the future: “I look forward to the next game
that we will be playing so that I, along with the team, can perform well.”
He also thanks the Goa Cricket Association for supporting him throughout his
journey. He now looks forward to taking his game forward and having better
performances when on the field. “We always have a vision of qualifying to
the next level. And if my feat has inspired the cricket culture in Goa and
brought pride amongst youngsters in Goa, then I’m really happy. I just want to
bat and continue loving my batting. I want to contribute my best to the team’s
performance and perform well as it takes a lot of hard work to perform in the
Ranji trophy,” concludes Sagun.
Here’s what
Goa’s cricketing community has to say about Sagun Kamat:
“I am really
happy for Sagun. It isn’t easy to score three hundred plus in an innings. He
worked really hard and we can all see the result. It is a proud moment when one
of your team mates is among the top batsmen in an innings in the history of
Ranji cricket. I personally enjoyed every minute that I batted with him. He has
made all cricket lovers in Goa proud and has proved to other states that Goan
players are no less in the domestic circuit. I wish him all the luck and hope
he keeps scoring big runs.”
Amogh Desai, Cricketer
“Sagun is a very
good friend and like a mentor to me. I am very happy for him. And I’d like to
see him score more runs and probably break more records.”
Keenan Vaz, Cricketer
“It’s a proud
feeling to have a Goan cricketer to finally score a triple century. Sagun Kamat
has always been an amazing player to watch and definitely sets an example for
all the developing cricketers. He deserves a shot at the IPL not just based on
his triple century but all his games in the GPL, Ranji, etc. He reminds me of
Saurav Ganguly – the way he bats, aggressively.”
