On the occasion
of World Philately Day, an exhibition of rare stamps was organised on October 12, 2018.The mosaic of
stamps and other postal items displayed at the Philately Exhibition currently
underway has attracted good numbers of philately lovers, students and the
general public at the Maquinez Palace, Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG), where
it is being held.
The exhibition that is being organised by India Post throughout
the country, is part of this National Post Week celebrations, from October 9 to
October 15, 2018. Also, as part of the celebrations, the Department of Posts
celebrated World Post Day on October 9, Savings Bank Day on October 10, Postal
Life Insurance Day on October 11 and Philately Day on October 12.
The exhibition was launched by Senior Superintendent of Post
Offices, Goa Divisions along with the Chief Guest Deepak Prabhu Puskar,
Sanvordem MLA and GSIDC Chairman and Guest of Honour Maendra Alvares on Friday.
The Deepak Prabhu Puskarpraised the contribution and the
platform India Posts has offered and helped the country over the years.
Noted artist and
sculptor Maendra Alvares saw his Pictorial cancellation on Mirabai Sculpture,
Loutolim released at the philately exhibition.
Philatelists from the
state displayed various exhibits on various themes like Series of Postal stamps
on Mahatma Gandhi, Quit India Movement, etc.
Post cards,
competition cards and stamps released during various periods that show light on
philately are on display. School children have been visiting the exhibitionin
large numbers.
The Department of
Posts officials expressed their happiness to see the large turnout of students
in particular and spoke passionately about how they tried to be innovative with
this exhibition in order to attract interest amongst youngsters.Officials said
that the objective is to encourage students to collect stamps and know the history.
They added that stamp
exhibitions are one of the most effective ways to build up an interest in
philately as they provide a forum for collectors to display their collection
for being judged and to attract the young to this fascinating pursuit.
While
there are more than 10 crore stamp collectors in the world, there are around 50
lakh in India. Postage stamps are often called paper ambassadors, since they
portray the heritage, habitat, history, arts, literature and culture of the
country of issue.
