For those past our school and
college days, when were hear the term ‘Friendship Day’, it usually brings to
mind friends and the good moments we had in their company. Yet, in today’s day
and age, it gets difficult to stay in touch with friends, let alone message or
call them on Friendship Day, which is celebrated on the first Sunday of August
and falls on August 6, this year. But despite the lack of regular
communication, there are certain friendships that can never be forgotten. Those
are the friends with whom you share your deepest troubles and worries as well
as the happiest of moments. They are unbiased and honest in their opinions, and
sometimes the only thing stopping you from heading down the wrong path. And
these friends don’t need your constant reminders that you are still friends
with them. Just a simple ‘Hello’ is enough to go back to where you left off.
Here’s what some
Goans have to say about their friendships, especially
those forged with their childhood buddies:
Mallory
Mascarenhas has been my friend since our school days at Assumpta Convent High
School and we even went to the
same college. She recently got married. Though we don’t meet every day,
we make it a point to plan lunch, dinner, bike rides or even a day out with
friends. People confuse us to be brother and sister as we look alike and we
share everything. Mcneil Cabral is also my best friend and he is now working
abroad but when we are together, we can talk about everything under the sun.

Rodrigues, Salzora
Alban Santos
Fernandes from Colva has been my best friend since we first met in Std III at St Anthony’s High School,
Monte Guirim, and we
have been together through the
years. We talk about our school and now as the Monte 68 Batch, we will be
celebrating the Platinum Jubilee of the school. We share whatever is happening
in our lives and we meet either in Panjim or Margao. Even after we finished
school, I was offered the job of a teacher and Alban was a school clerk. As
youngsters, we would always spend days in each other’s houses and even moved to
Bombay together for work.

I share a
very strong friendship with Rupa Morajkar from Mapusa. Though we were
classmates since Std VI,
we only became good friends in Std
X and we have been great friends since then. We share everything open
heartedly and she is great in giving me advice. One thing I love most about
Rupa is her honesty; she
won’t side with me because I am her friend but she will tell me the truth
whether I like it or not. We do not meet regularly or call every day but we both know that we will always be there for each
other.
