THE WORD HAS BEEN SPOKEN AND GOA LOVES IT

Goa has found a new taste for spoken word poetry, courtesy a string of events hosted at various venues across Goa by Bullock Cart Poetry, an organisation from Pune. Café finds out more

Priyam Redican, a spoken word artiste and the co-founder of Bullock Cart Poetry, calls Goa her
second home for this is her favourite place to perform. After starting off her
career as a clinical psychologist with a keen interest in the field of positive
psychology, Priyam, along with her brother Chandrakant, was bitten by this new
bug – an art form that she has completely immersed herself into. The result –
Priyam currently tries to apply the basic principles of positive psychology
into poetry and has worked with students across the country. Priyam recently
performed at 6 Assagao and is now gearing up for two more performances – at The
Dogears Bookshop in Margao on September 21, 2017 and at Gallery Gitanjali in
Panjim on September 22. While Anirudh Eka and Priyam Redican will be performing
at both the venues, Srijan Dubey will join the duo to perform at Gallery
Gitanjali.

Priyam says, “Goa is my favourite place to
perform. Especially because of the kind of audience that we meet on a regular
basis at 6 Assagao. They are always eager to wait back after an event and
discuss the topics that the poems spoke about. Most of the people I have met at
these events are well read and are from different pockets of the country, so
conversation is always good and they have so much to share. Also, poetry in
general is appreciated and when we do something like spoken word, they are very
responsive.”

Priyam feels that Goa is taking to this new art form slowly and
a culture is being developed. To further contribute to this growth, team
Bullock Cart Poetry is planning to have regular events, monthly open mics and
workshops, apart from hosting a poetry and chai event once a week at 6 Assagao.
Priyam says, “Spoken word is new to a lot of people in Goa. In Pune, we conduct
one or two events every week, so there is a sizable community there. We want to
replicate that here. I am talking to different venues to help us do like a poet
exchange programme; between Pune, Mumbai, Shillong and Goa, we could build a
very strong community.”

Bullock
Cart Poetry is an organisation dedicated to creating and presenting spoken word
poetry. Over the past 18 months, Bullock Cart Poetry has performed events at
various places around the country and now they are bringing a new line up of
poets to Goa. Based out of Pune, Bullock Cart Poetry has done events in Goa as
well as various other places in India. Like every organisation that has
specific skill sets and agendas, Bullock Cart Poetry creates rooted material
and spoken word that reaches out to the masses, builds community and most
importantly, makes great poetry. The team derives inspiration from Indian poets
from various times, including Dilip Chitre, a popular bilingual Indian poet.
