As the world gets faster and sadly more complex the basic positive human characteristics like being helpful, being patient and displaying an understanding of situations and then reacting are going out of the window. Being kind is not very important it seems now. What is kindness? Kindness is the quality of being caring, helpful, and gentle. It’s a type of behavior that involves acts of concern, consideration, generosity, or assistance towards others, without expecting anything in return. Kind people are compassionate, polite, thoughtful, and respectful, and they have love and tenderness for others. They support others when they’re having problems, and they don’t hurt anyone, whether it’s a person, animal, or plant
Kindness is an incredible attribute and although it can happen spontaneously, it’s also good to be intentional about it. Be Kind to Humankind Week is an ideal opportunity to level up that
kindness factor, flex those kindness muscles and have fun spreading happiness around!
Be Kind to Humankind Week was founded in 1988 by a woman named Lorraine Jara from Toms River, New Jersey. Now, more than 35 years later, the event continues to be celebrated with the purpose of bringing kindness and hope to make the world a better and happier place for all human beings on the planet.
One fun aspect of Be Kind to Humankind Week is that it uses each day of the week to address a different aspect of how to be kind to those in the surrounding community. The days signify a range of unique opportunities to put into practice the work of being kind.
Every day of this week deserves some thoughtful consideration for ways that individuals, school classrooms, youth groups, and all sorts of other community groups can display acts of kindness in honor of Be Kind to Humankind Week. Don’t forget that it’s great to be kind not only during this week but all throughout the year!
Make a difference in the life of one person or the whole world by being on the lookout for kindness opportunities during Be Kind to Humankind Week.
As opportunities arise during Be Kind to Humankind Week or anytime, it’s fun to be impetuous about giving, serving, helping or being kind to others. This might mean paying for the coffee order of the person behind in the drive-thru line. Or it could be looking for opportunities to help someone by holding open a door, carrying a heavy object, or letting them cut in front in traffic. Even just giving a smile to someone can make their day just a little bit brighter – and the impact can be contagious!. Omi, a musician based in Vasco said it was important to be kind. He said,” Before I make a decision it is important for me to think if it will hurt anyone. Yes, I may think about how it will benefit me but it should not hurt anyone else. That is important.” As a driver who uses his car everyday he said it was important to not give into one’s baser emotions when faced with rash driving. He said, “ I just try to keep calm and ignore the rash drivers. I follow the rules and try to focus on making the lives of other people on the road safer.” That he said was the very least he could do.
An organisation that is doing good work to help society is Sangath. Jolene Fernandes, the administration assistant who helps out said she was in the hotel industry and she needed a break. She decided to take a break and joined the NGO. She said, “ This initiative is very good. We are providing counselling to around 12 to 15 people in a week. This NGO has been in operation since 1996.” Sangath leverages community and health system resources to deliver psychosocial interventions for the prevention and care of mental health problems. We address a wide range of mental health concerns across the life course, from cognitive development in childhood to self-harm and depression in youth, to drinking problems, psychoses and dementia in adults.
Another person who believes in helping people in his own way is entrepreneur Conal Lobo. He said, “ I am a bachelor, I make my living and one day I will be gone. I use my money to offer assistance to people. It can be their children’s fees or a medical bill.” He said it was important to remember that there were people who were less fortunate and if it was possible to do something for them.
Be kind that is the only way people may remember you when you are gone.
