As of March7, 2020, Liverpool lead the 2019–20 Premier League from second-placed Manchester City, the reigning champions, by 25 points. Of the 29 matches played, they won 27 with one draw and one loss. During the course of this season they set the English top-flight record of 22 consecutive home wins beating their own record set in 1972—and matched the Premier league record of 18 consecutive wins.Liverpool also enjoyed a 44 match unbeaten run in the league—the second longest streak in top-flight history—ended by Watford on 29 February 2020.
For Liverpool fan Siraj Pissurlekar , this season has been just fantastic. He said “Liverpool has had an amazing season so far having just lost 1 game in the entire season of the PL. We were leading by 25 points which was virtually impossible for 2nd placed Man City to chase down. Being a Liverpool fan who has been watching and supporting the club right from the age of 7, an EPL title is something that I have always desperately wanted to see us lift and this has been our closest shot ever. If the season does get abandoned, I think it should be left to the other 19 teams to decide whether Liverpool should be handed over the trophy or not. If majority of them have no problem and give the benefit of the doubt to the fact that we have a gigantic lead, I think we should be handed over the title that we rightly deserve.” For Siddharth Mehta who is also a passionate FC Goa fan this season has been one that he will remember for a long time. He said “I have been very impressed with the performance of the Reds and the team had done so well and with just two games the season came to a standstill due to the virus. As far as I am concerned, the team is already the champion for all of us”. For Aritra Mukherjee a scribe and passionate Liverpool fan this has been a season to savour. He said “I say we’ve waited 30 years, don’t mind waiting a few more months for the inevitable. You didn’t just expect us to win the league in March and sip on Ribena until the end of season, did you? We are Liverpool and we are special. We are too used to doing things the Liverpool way. We do what people don’t expect us to do. Like win the League in a way that no other club have ever done. Do we deserve it you ask? What does your common sense say? We’ve won it already I say! Well played Kloppo and the boys. The day it officially happens, I will wear my Reds and sing YNWA at the top of my voice”. Hmmm..cheers to that. The EPL has several clubs and Manchester United is a club that has scores of fans and detractors. Omi Omkar felt that if one went by the facts on the ground, Liverpool were definitely there, ready to pick up the championship. He however felt Liverpool were in a slump in the last few matches they played. He said “They are known to slip up on the EPL titles in the past and anything was possible. It would be sad for the scousers though if they lose it this way but as a Manchester United Fan myself, I wouldn’t shed a tear”.
One will certainly look back at this season with much fascination as evidence will reveal the excellent performance by one team and the drama that came at the end.
