When big brother checks to ask “wassup”, WhatsApp is no longer a pvt zone, say Goan netizens

The government of India has in the new IT rules included a traceability clause that requires social media platforms to locate “the first originator of the information” if required by authorities. WhatsApp has close to 450 million users in India, the impact of this rule will definitely be significant on the platform. Its users in Goa had much to say

I would migrate to Telegram or any such similar platform for sure. I have been on Whatsapp from the 5th grade and now I am in the first year and have been on that platform for a very long time. I think all the online platforms did a very good job highlighting this move by the government and I learned enough. I would like to keep what is mine private. – Renita Monteiro,Student Yes I am aware of the move by the government. There is a lot of speculation about the future of popular platforms like Facebook. There is Snapchat where you can exchange info, chat. Remember half the people have something to hide and the other half don’t. I don’t think I will migrate to another platform and I don’t think they will allow it to happen given that they have decided to go to court. – Dylan Correya,Student I would not mind sticking here. It has all the security I have and it is very convenient. If I am convinced, yes I will change. – Ishita Rao,Student If the government forces the clause to be implemented by WhatsApp, then yes I will shift to telegram, as the government will be depriving people of their right to privacy which is a fundamental right provided by the constitution of India – Mark Valadares,Service Yes. When the government announced their rules regarding WhatsApp last year, a number of people shifted to Telegram. Though many continue using WhatsApp and Telegram though not as popular as Whatsapp, more and more people are using it. Whether people will completely stop using WhatsApp remains to be seen, but it’s popularity may diminish in view of the government attempt to control WhatsApp and other social media sites – Sybil Rodrigues,Service Social media is a fast changing world. As technology changes and advancement in the apps the trend keeps changing from time to time. However Whatsapp remains the hot favourite amongst the youth . Despite the government attempts to revise its privacy clauses and control over the app, you feel there is a long way for telegram to be taking a share of the market . – Siddharth Mehta,Businessman Well the Government is trying to control everything, not just WhatsApp. Right from Privacy till Freedom of Speech they have been misusing their powers. I used to use Telegram long back to send across Pictures and videos without losing clarity. So they don’t really care about what they think. – Conrad Barreto,Influencer Initially there was a lot of talk of people moving from WhatsApp to Telegram but after constant attempts by external forces people have still stuck to WhatsApp as it’s more user friendly and literally everyone uses it. For the younger generation it might be easier to move from WhatsApp to Telegram but for their parents and family members would be a bit more difficult because a lot of them have just started using WhatsApp and moving to a new app all over again would be difficult for them. A few of my friends have been using Telegram and WhatsApp for a very long time including me as WhatsApp is used by everyone and as a gamer alot of people use telegram for file sharing which isn’t possible on WhatsApp on a large scale. – Duncan Rodrigues,Businessman As per new IT rules all the intermediaries (whatsapp, Telegram, Facebook, signal, instagram) are subjected to the new draft rules hence the question of shifting from one platform to another does not arise. In the first place, as per IT policy the Intermediaries are forced to appoint 3 Point of Contact persons (Chief compliance officer, Nodal officer & Resident Grievance, officer), to look if the rules are followed by intermediaries, will bring an end to, end to end encryption of most of the intermediaries (including Telegram). And at this point personal privacy is violated. Suppose if one sends a message against the Govt or Criticizes the Govt on a certain issue, he/she can be traced and put behind bars “claiming its in appropriate content” – Clesito Fernandes,IT Professional The government is asking the apps to give them the power to invade our privacy. It’s trying to supress the people’s voices. – Jesus Pereira,Service I’m well aware that WhatsApp is used by many to spread hate & fake news too. But what about the various news channels who carry biased reports on their channels & hardly even do their jobs correctly by being the people’s voice..? There are certainly other ways to catch hold of the hate mongers online but not this way. Privacy of the citizens should be upheld else we may soon turn into another China. #GodSaveIndia – Omi,Musician
