On April 27,
Saturday, a large number of daily commuters in Goa were part of a traffic Jam that left them stuck at the
junction for nearly two to three hours on the way to the south. More than 50
flyers were delayed to the airport, some missed their trains, children were crying
in the bus with hunger and thirst and commuters reached home at 11:00- 11:30.
Moreover, the Vasco and Margao transport were unavailable at that late hour and
many who traveled by the bus had to call their friends or relatives for a lift.
The logjam at the site of the new Zuari bridge construction is
an invitation to traffic chaos, but have we ever looked at one of the main
reasons why traffic jams happen, even when there are accidents or breakdowns I
e undisciplined driving and reckless lane management
DySp Traffic of North
Goa , Dharmesh Angle We have to understand
the psychology of the person traveling. Suppose he/she is going to the airport,
he is not in a state of mind and is under stress of reaching to the airport on
time; hence they end up breaking the law out of frustration. Same goes for
someone in need of urgent work…,” he says.
According to Dysp Angle, we have to first understand the volume
of the traffic on the Zuari Bridge, especially since the bridge in south has a
very narrow lane. If an accident occurs, it takes time to clear the accident
and automatically traffic will pile up at both the side. At the same time while
clearing the accident if another one takes place or a vehicle gets punctured,
the traffic will equally pile up on both the side, “The back log keeps
increasing,” says DYSP Angle.
Agacaim Police
Inspector Uday Gawde agrees and says that
there is nothing that can be done except for people to be careful while
travelling. “There is a slow diversion towards the Cortalim side. The narrow
construction of the Zuari Bridge and the diversion creates the traffic jam.
Diversion is the main problem but the police are giving their 100 percent.”
Export Manager of
Tulip Diagnostic Private Ltd Vasudev Naik one of the daily commuters from Margao to Panjim says, “We are
the one who create the problem and then we shout about it. We all want to go
somewhere, but the problem is nobody is ready to follow the rules on road.”
Vasudev feels the
traffic is not managed properly. “With the help of policemen or the barricades
this problem can be sorted. After all it is all about people’s co-operation.
Once the road work is completed everything will be back to normal,” he
explains.
“It was a chaotic
Saturday for them who travelled to and from the south!” exclaimed Archie
Fernandes, media person, a
commuter from Panjim. “For most of us who live in Panjim, we are now used to
the Atal Setu Bridge and everything runs smoothly here. There is very less
traffic compared to how we used to suffer earlier, but I guess the same
situation we suffered has been happening in the south currently, with the new
bridge under construction a route has been blocked and there is only one way
for all the people to travel, hence the traffic.”
Adv. Moses Pinto, Author of the Book: Practice Traffic Yoga explains through excerpts from his book
published in the year 2014. Some people are not aware of the importance of
obeying traffic regulations
“I always keep an eye
out for the hand gestures and instructions of the traffic police personnel who
are on the side of the Road trying to regulate the smooth traffic flow.
Obedience to traffic police is a key as they usually have superior information
about road incidents through their wireless systems that is relayed by the
respective Traffic Cell,” shares Moses.
Niharika Neurekar a student who has to
travel daily from Margao says, “I suggest we all drive safely, sometimes we
tend to break the rules but we shouldn’t do it on purpose and should be
cautious. We should also check the traffic situation online, I usually do it.
Similarly, Verlon Medeira says that accidents
will normally tend to happen if people drive recklessly with no lane
management. “It’s simple, you be safe yourself. We also need to try and avoid
racing or overtaking, especially on a bridge where we are not allowed to speed
up.”
We have to understand the psychology of the person traveling.
