VASCO: Two two-wheelers were gutted in a fire at Borges Building, Vasco, in the wee hours of Friday.

The motorcycle (GA-06-9855) and the scooter (GA-02-L-7212) were parked under the staircase of the building when the vehicles caught fire. Both the vehicles were gutted in the fire.
Speaking to Herald, Euvin Fernandes, owner of both the vehicles, informed that at about 5 am he heard some sound of fire flames and rushed out of his flat.
“The entire building was filled with thick smoke and I couldn’t go down. As I got chocked due to the smoke, I rushed to the terrace and came down from the other block and to my surprise saw both two vehicles engulfed in the fire,” informed Fernandes.
He further said fire tenders from MPT and Vasco Fire Services doused off the fire.
Vasco Police is investigating the case.
Sentry thwarts off leopard attack bid
VASCO: The Navy encountered an intruder of a different kind when a leopard attempted to attack a naval sentry at the Naval Air Station at INS Hansa.
In a press note, Navy PRO Cdr Prashant Mathur stated that the incident occurred late Monday night when the leopard attempted an attack on a naval sentry, positioned close to the technical and the military aircraft parking area.
“The sentry was alert and swift to take evasive action and managed to thwart the attempt by the leopard and the animal ran away,” stated Cdr Mathur.
The Navy has also voiced concern that the presence of leopards in the area “will pose a danger to the civil populace in and around Dabolim and Bogmalo.”
“The Navy has requested authorities to enhance efforts to trap the big cat more vigorously before it causes any harm to humans,” said Cdr Mathur.
“The forest department has been making all efforts to catch the big cat, but the leopard has managed to elude the capture till date,” Cdr Mathur added.
Cash, ornaments stolen at Betim
PORVORIM: Cash, gold ornaments and other items worth Rs 1.64 lakh were stolen from a house at Betim.
According to Porvorim Police, Faiyazuddin Farooqui complained that the accused entered his house by breaking the main door and stole cash, two gold bangles and a pistol, all worth Rs 1.64 lakh between 12 noon on February 13 and 3 pm on February 15.

Items worth Rs 18.35 lakh stolen
VASCO: Rubber sleeves springs and other items worth Rs 18.35 lakh were stolen from a company godown at Verna.
According to Verna Police, the company human resources manager Louanne Gomes complained that from January 31 to February 8, some persons stole rubber sleeves springs, compression springs inner, screw and washers, all worth Rs 18.35 lakh from the company godown.

Demo on rescue techniques
PANJIM: Some students of Dhempe College of Arts and Science were given a demonstration on rescue techniques by the Home Guards units of the Goa Police.
The group of around 50 students was shown how to carry an accident victim, and basics of first aid were taught to them.
The function was organised by Commander of Home Guards John Aguiar.

Shiroda HSS bags 3 NCERT Awards
PANJIM: The Shiroda Higher Secondary School has bagged three of the five NCERT Awards for the year 2011-12.
Ms Lourata Travasso bagged the Best Student Achiever Award.
Lourata stood first in the Vocational Stream of Commercial Garment Designing and Making at Goa Board exams in March 2012 securing 89%.The Best Vocational Teacher Award has been awarded to Ms Lou Renita da Costa Barneto while the school has been awarded the Best Vocational Institution Award.The school has received three awards for the second consecutive year. Last year, it bagged the Best School Industry Linkage Award, Best Student Achiever Award, and Best Vocational Teacher Award. The school has so far bagged 10 NCERT awards. The awards function will be held on February 28, at Shyamla Hills, Bhopal.
‘Nature My Valentine’ at Big Foot
PANJIM: ‘Nature My Valentine’ was coined at the Big Foot with the aim of providing lifetime support of the environment and the dwindling resources of the ecosystem.
It was a novelty that became popular. Today, instead of the stereotypical bouquets wrapped in plastic, potted plants and flowering shrubs were exchanged as gifts. The ‘Insulin’ plants, and the Tulsi or Basil were exchanged at the Big Foot on February 14. Valentines Day was celebrated at the Big Foot, spreading a note of health and simplicity, to promote a different message of ‘caring’.
Workshop on medicinal plants
PANJIM: A two-day national level seminar on ‘contribution of Konkanis to Hortus Indicus Malabaricus’, a treatise on the medicinal plants found from Goa to Malabar, has been organised by Goa Konkani Academy from February 18.
The seminar is organized to celebrate 333rd year of publication of the book. The book was published in 1678 by Dutch Governor H Van Rheed. The voluminous book contains a total of 1616 pages, with 12 volumes and 780 plants documented in it. There are 791 pictures (the names of the plants are given in Malayalam, Konkani, Portuguese and Arabic) in the book.Three Konkani traditional medical practitioners ~ Appu Bhat, Ranga Bhat and Vinayak Pandit contributed to this book. The book is credited for the first block printing of Konkani in Devanagari Script and Malayalam.
The seminar is organized in collaboration with Directorate of Archives and Archaeology, Anugraha Charitable Trust, Kerala and Konkani Language and Cultural Foundation-Mangalore, will be inaugurated by NRI Commissioner, Dr Wilfred Mesquita.

Yuva Clinic opened at Candolim
PANJIM: As part of the health services endeavour to revive and rebrand their teen clinics, a Yuva Clinic was inaugurated at the Candolim Primary Health Centre.
The Yuva Clinic, dedicated to adolescents will provide information, education and primary health services for adolescents pertaining to health problems of this age group.
The clinic will also cater to the urgent need required to sensitise the adolescents about their health and process of growth. The clinic was inaugurated by Sarpanch of Candolim Sandra Fialho, in the presence of Dr Krishnamurthy, Dr Sachin Govenkar, Dr Maria Margaret Sequeira, Dr Roshan Nazareth, Dr Durgesh N Naik and Vidhya Nagvenkar.
The clinic will be open for adolescents on all working days from 2 pm to 4.30 pm.
Electrical shop raided
MARGAO: Officials of the legal metrology conducted a raid at an electrical shop on Station road, here, on Friday and seized goods worth Rs 4.5 lakh.
Acting on a tip off that the shop was overcharging customers, Assistant Controller, Legal Metrology Prasad Shirodkar along with his team raided the premises only to find goods on sale in violation of Packaged Commodities Act.
“The trader was not ready to give invoice copies and bills of the goods supplier,” he said and warned that the ongoing raids would continue in the future.
Youth dies in car crash
MARGAO: A 21-year youth from Chinchinim Osbert Pereira died in a road accident at Sucaldem-Chinchinim late Thursday night.
Cuncolim police said that the deceased was proceeding in a car when the vehicle rammed against a road side coconut tree. The accident occurred at around 10.45 pm. Police said the rider died on the spot.
The front portion of the car suffered extensive damage due to the impact. The police are investigating.
One held in excise case
MARGAO: Sleuths of the Mumbai Excise descended on a distillery at the Cuncolim Industrial Estate on Friday evening and took one person into custody. Sources in the know said the arrested accused was wanted in connection with a pending excise matter in a Pune court. They said the accused complained of chest pain and was later admitted to a hospital.
The officials of the excise first came to the Margao police headquarters in two vehicles and proceeded to the Cuncolim along with constables of Margao police.
