Mil-Mel-Nel at TAG’s Meet the Artiste 

PANJIM: Milagres Fernandes, Cezar D’Mello and Agnel D’Costa, the trio who has entertained tiatr lovers for the last 39 years under the banner of Mil-Mel-Nel will be the artistes for the month of January at TAG’s ‘Meet the Artiste’ programme. The programme will be held on January 19, at TAG’s Conference Hall, Campal Trade Centre, Campal, Panjim at 4:15 pm.

CME in clinical governance held

PANJIM: Goa Medical College, Bambolim in collaboration with the Indian Academy of Cytologists organised a CME (continuing medical education) programme on clinical governance at Goa Medical College, recently, as a part of Christmas lecture. The visiting faculty was Dr Anil Desai consultant surgeon in Wexham Park Hospital, Slough, Berkshire, UK and Spire Thames Valley Hospital London. He spoke to the doctors and medical students on clinical governance. Dr R G Wiseman Pinto chaired and coordinated the scientific programme.

K-OSS inaugurated

PANJIM: K-OSS, Goa’s number one college cultural event was inaugurated by Art and Culture Secretary, Mathew Sammuels today.  The two-day event is organised by the Department of Event Management of S S Dempo College, headed by Prof Vishal Rane. Vijendra Kamat, Registrar, Goa University, Sunil Prabhudesai Administrator, Dempo Charities Trust and Prof. Varsha Kamat were present on the occasion.  Principal, Dr Radhika Nayak said one of the main highlights of the event is the release of the official souvenir.  K-OSS is marked with superiority in quality, carnival being theme depiction, ‘We need to stop walking and start galloping’, said Sunil Prabhudesai. 16 colleges are participating in the two-day event. Mathew Sammuels appreciated the team spirit and co-ordinating power of the Students’ Council and students of the Event Management Department of the college, in fund raising. Mementos were presented to the dignitaries.  Elroy Marques proposed the vote of thanks. The event will hold contests such as Who Dares Wins, Comedy Circus, Lights Camera Action (mime), 3rd Degree, Mr & Mrs K-OSS and Battle of the Bands.

Seminar on marital communication

PANJIM: Diocesan Family Service Centre (DFSC) organised a seminar-cum-workshop on marital communication at the day-long program held at Merces Parish, to mark the Holy Family Sunday. The seminar-cum-workshop began with the Eucharist; celebrated by Fr Clifford Castelino, who exalted the congregation to remain faithful to their calling. He further stressed that families are build on faith and faith sustains families and families are witnesses to faith.  The gathering was called to profess, celebrate and live their faith in the families. The second part of the program was handled by Alex Vaz and Sharmila Vaz along with Fr Clifford Castelino, co-ordinator of the Department of Family Social Issues. The deliberation on the topic “Marital Communication”, the group was helped to understand that there are positive and negative communications and we communicate verbally, non-verbally and physically in marriage. The group was made aware and guided through the various roadblocks to a quality marital relationship. 

Food distributed to aged women

PANJIM: Clube Nacional president and committee members visited Anchor of Hope, a home for the aged women at Candolim, recently. The “Clube” members interacted with the inmates by cutting the cake and singing together. Food and essential commodities were distributed to the inmates.

CME programme at GMC 

PANJIM: The Department of Pathology in collaboration with the Indian Academy of Cytologists will organise a Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme in Pathology on January 17, at 3.45 pm, in the Pathology Department. The Faculty includes Dr Ramdas Naik, professor and former head of Pathology Department, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore; Dr Sanjay Deshmukh, professor and Head of Pathology Department; Mrs Kashibai Navale Medical College, Pune and former Professor and Head of Pathology Department B J Medical College, Pune and Dr C Bharath, professor and Head of Pathology Department Vidyanagari Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS), Bellary. The CME will be chaired by Dr R G Wiseman Pinto and will comprise of a glass slide seminar-cum-workshop on Pentahead Microscope covering clinical cases of different systems.

Consumers Shoppee inaugurated

PANJIM: ‘Consumers Shoppee’, an exhibition of consumer and household products was inaugurated at the hands of CCP Mayor, Vaidehi Naik at Don Bosco High School’s Indoor stadium, Panjim. Councillor Shital Naik, Fr Willy, Administrator of Don Bosco High School, Ujwalla Tarkar, organizer Meenal Mahadikar and various company representatives were present. Over 60 reputed companies including Bajaj Appliances, TTK Prestige, Prince Ware, Singer, Lotus Furniture, Godrej Tyson, Usha International, Hygienic, Nirlep, Pravin Masale, Vasturaviraj, Mapro, Olivia, Hem, Sundaram, Sonic Octave, Capital Food, Rainbow Electronics, Sanobar, Eureka Forbes Ltd, Sudarshan Saur Shakti, Mobilia Classica, Amrutanjan, Gits, Bofa Electricals, Vibha Natural, Neel Beverages, Vaidya Sane, Surabhi, Shalvi Fitness, AMC Cookware have their products displayed at the expo. The exhibition will remain open for the public till January 20 from 1:30 pm to 9 pm and on Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 9 pm.

Konkani film releasing in Margao

PANJIM: This year’s lone official Goan entry for IFFI and most talked Konkani film, ‘DIGANT’ will be released at Cine Vishant, Margao on January 18. The film will be screened in the theatre till January 24. The production of Vinsan Graphics is selected for various international film festivals. The main cast of the film are Rajesh Pednekar, Deepa Moghe, Sameeksha Desai and Pranav Biche. The film has script by Prasad Lolienkar and is directed by Dnyanesh Moghe.

Workshops at Davorlim, Taleigao  

PANJIM: Public Works Department will organise a block level workshop for Salcete taluka on Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan on January 18, at Babu Naik Hall, near Maruti Mandir, Davorlim, from 10 am to 5 pm. The Registration will begin from 9 am to 10 pm.Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar will be the chief guest for the inaugural function.  Ministers ~ Ramkrishna Dhavlikar and Avertano Furtado along with MLAs of Margao, Nuvem, Curtorim, Fatorda, Benaulim, Cuncolim and Velim will attend. Another block-level workshop for Tiswadi taluka on “Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan” will be held on January 19 at Village Panchayat Community Hall, Taleigao, from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm. The registration will begin from 9 am to 9.30 am. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar will be the chief guest.  

PWD Minister Ramkrishna Dhavlikar, MLAs of St Cruz, Cumbharjua, St Andre and Taleigao will also attend.

Vivekananda Vichaar Pradarshan

PANJIM: ‘Vivekananda Vichaar Pradarshan with Vishwa Bandhutwa Rath’ will be held on January 17, at Kala Academy, Panjim, from 4:30pm to 6:30pm and on January 18 and 19 from 10 am to 6 pm. The exhibition will have 150th Birth anniversary special students edition published by Ramkrishna Math and Mission centres across India at a special prize of Rs 75 per pack (Marathi) and Rs 50 per pack for English edition. Other books such as complete works of Swami Vivekananda, photo panels, yearly calendar/inspiration calendar will also be available at the exhibition.

Murder accused bouncers nabbed

MARGAO: Colva police on Wednesday arrested Xavier D’costa (23) from Navelim and Basilio alias Pokod Ratos from Benaulim in connection with the murder of the Chennai tourist Madan G on Sunday. Police Inspector Nilesh Rane told the media that the police were on look out for the two accused who were employed as bouncers at the shack for alleged murder of Madan by stabbing with knife. On Tuesday, PI Rane along with staff raided the residence of Pokod’s sister at Montir, Loutulim were the both accused are said to have stayed one day after the incident and then shifted to a relative place at Paroda. When police raided the place at Paroda, the accused duo were traced to be staying on the river bank from were they were arrested. During interrogation, the accused are said to have confessed to have assaulted Madan and his colleagues, but said they are unaware as to who stabbed the deceased on chest. Police however is learnt to have in their procession the CCTV footage were the incident is recorded. Further investigation is being conducted by Colva PI Nilesh Rane under supervision of Margao DySP Mohan Naik and South Goa SP Shekar Prabhudesai.

Anticipatory bail plea heard 

MARGAO: Anticipatory bail application moved by Pramod Arjun Velip, 32 and Sanjay Gopal Devidas, 35 both from Morpilla, Quepem came up for hearing on Wednesday, Jan 16 before south Goa Additional Sessions Judge Vijaya Pol.  Public Prosecutor Subhash Dessai argued that prima facie evidence shows that accused are involved in heinous crime and the victim lady was subjected to forcible sexual intercourse for long time by blackmailing her on basis of obscene video clippings clicked during commission of rape. The accused maintained they have been falsely implicated in the crime and that there is nothing to be recovered at the instance of accused and that both accused are permanent resident of Morpilla, Quepem. According to complaint filed by the married lady about three years back the accused with their common intention under pretext of dropping her at her residence took her in their vehicle when she had come to Bloc Development Officer office at Quepem for some work.

Loutulim resident succumbs to injuries

MARGAO: Roque Alves, 60, resident of Kharwado, Loutulim who had sustained grievous head injury in fall on January 9 expired on Wednesday, Jan 16 at the Goa Medical College Hospital, Bambolim where he was admitted. According to Maina Curtorim police the deceased fell from a height after slipping from ladder while erecting pandal along with his brothers and nephew for novenas service at the St Sebastian at Monte, Loutulim and sustained grievous head injury. A case of unnatural dead has been registered by Maina Curtorim police. 

Flying Squad stops hill cutting at Borim

PONDA: The North Goa Flying Squad on Wednesday evening stopped an alleged hill cutting activity in a private property at Borim-Ponda. Acting on a compliant by Jose Rodrigues from Shiroda, a team of North Goa Flying Squad, Vivek Mayenkar from Town and Country Planning and Land Surveyor Anush Chodankar conducted an inspection. Since the property owner could not furnish details of the permissions obtained to undertake hill cutting, the owner was asked to stop the work and report to the Deputy Collector’s office North Goa with necessary documents or permissions obtained to carry out hill cutting. At the time of inspection, four trucks and a JCB were seen at the site.

Russian injured while swimming

PANJIM: A Russian woman and an operator sustained injuries at Querim beach, while a 30-year-old tourist from Rajasthan was saved at Patnem beach on Wednesday. According to reports, Gurvinder Jeet Singh (30) from Rajasthan was swimming in chest deep water at Patnem beach. After sometime, he waded in deeper water when the tourist got drifted by the rip current. Lifeguards rushed towards the victim and secured and brought him ashore safely. In another incident at Querim beach in Pernem, Albina Poccus (25) from Russia was paragliding off the hillside between Querim and Arambol. After a while, the operator, Pawan Kumar (35) from Himachal Pradesh, lost control and they both crashed into the rocky hillside and slid into the shallow waters. The Russian woman sustained injury and the operator suffered a fracture to his right leg, besides other injuries. 

Candolim restaurant gutted in fire

CALANGUTE: Property worth Rs 3 lakh was destroyed after a restaurant was gutted in a fire at Candolim on Wednesday.

According to reports, fire tenders from Mapusa and Saligao-Pilerne rushed to the site and managed to put off the fire.

Chairs, table, electrical items, liquors, etc, all worth Rs 3 lakh were destroyed in the fire. An adjacent cloth shop was saved by the locals and others by removing the cloth items from the shop.
