Complain over gram sabha 

MARGAO: A group of Aquem-Baixo gram sabha members on Wednesday called on Salcete Block Development Officer, Uday Prabhudesai, and complained about the gram sabha held on Sunday when Carnival was being celebrated.

The delegation comprising of former Sarpanch Inacio Dias, Agnelo Dias and others drew attention of the BDO that the meeting was conducted by the Sarpanch with only nine members and demanded that the same be declared null and void and hold a fresh meeting.

The BDO gave the delegation a patient hearing and explained that he has no powers to declare the meeting null and void and urged them to take up the mater with the Director of Panchayats for relief. Members of the delegation said they will file a petition before the Panchayat Director for necessary action in the matter.

Chandor sarpanch clarifies 

MARGAO: Sarpanch of Chandor Village Panchayat Etelvina Antao has said the question of identifying any land fill site for disposal of debris did not come up for discussions at the gram sabha meeting held on Sunday. 

The sarpanch clarified that though the gram sabha complimented the clean up work carried out by the Panchayat in the market area, the issue of identifying a site for dumping of the debris was not discussed at the meeting. “This matter over a land fill site for debris dumping was never discussed at the gram sabha held on February 17,” Antao added.

Conductor booked for molestation 

PANJIM: The Panjim police have booked a bus conductor for allegedly molesting and assaulting a female passenger while on a bus which was plying from Banastari on Tuesday morning. 

The lady had alleged in her complaint to the local police that the conductor, whose name is not known, touched her inappropriately and when she confronted him, he slapped her. 

A case under section 354 of IPC has been registered against the conductor for outraging the modesty and police investigation is underway. 

Motorists booked

PANJIM: As many as 530 motorists were booked for using dazzling and improper headlights in a special drive by the Goa Traffic Police from February 6-15, 2013.  Majority of the 136 challans were issued by Margao traffic cell, while the least 27 challans were issued at in Curchorem traffic cell.  Panjim had 29 offenders booked, Mapusa 97, Ponda 127, Calangute 41 and Vasco 73 cases during this period for these offences. 

Usgao man ends life

PONDA: A 27-year-old man from Kasaille-Usgao allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself to a tree along the bypass road at Tisk-Usgao on Wednesday. According to Ponda Police, Arjun Bandiwadar was reported missing since Tuesday evening. Locals saw the body hanging to a tree on Wednesday  and informed the police. Police conducted the panchanama and sent the body to GMC for post-mortem. 

Structure demolished

PANJIM: The Administrator of Comunidades (Central Zone) demolished a controversial structure on comunidade land in Corlim. The demolition was carried out in the presence of the Joint Mamlatdar Tiswadi, Acting Secretary Comunidade Central Zone, Panjim, PWD, Corlim Comunidade Attorney Baptista Pereira and President Inacio Lopes Pereira.

The encroachment on comunidade land started in 2007 and the construction was stopped by committee members with the help of Old Goa Police.

Norbert to open three outlets at Mapusa, Margao, Ponda

PANJIM: The Norbert’s Fitness Studio fitness mania rolls onto Mapusa, Margao and Ponda. 

The expansion is in sync with Norbert D’Souza’s vision of spreading fitness across the length and breadth of Goa. The opening at Mapusa is in the second week of March, followed by Margao in the first half of May. Ponda is scheduled for the year-end.

Training program on market essentials 

PANJIM: The Centre for Entrepreneurship Development for Women (CED-W) Cell of Canara Bank, Goa Circle, organized a training program in Paper Art at Assanora, on February 18. 

The training was basically to teach the self help groups to make paper bags out of old newspaper and also decorative gift bags of hand made paper.

The innovative program was organized keeping in mind the reduction of the use of plastic bags which are not bio-degradable and create a nuisance for its disposal. Keen interest was shown by the members of the self help groups.

In all, 28 women of the various self help groups supported by the Assonora branch of Canara Bank were imparted training under the guidance of trainer, Rekha Borkar and CED (W) Officer, Belinda de Souza.

The Divisional Manager, K Laxman Kamath, Canara Bank, Goa Circle, chief guest for the occasion, Sapana Mapari, Sarpanch of Assonora and the Assonora branch manager, A J Mathews, were present on the occasion. 

The participants received a Certificate of Participation for the training program.

Dance contest winners

COLLEM: Puja Sagaonkar bagged the first prize in the all Goa Solo dance contest organized by Dudhsagar Kalakendra Collem to mark its 21st anniversary at Ganesh Temple, Collem. Other prize winners are Samiksha Shirodkar (second), Sarvangi Dessai (third), Shreya Prabhu (fourth) and Shrusti Nerulkar (fifth). 

Collem Deputy Sarpanch Ramesh Khandeparkar was the chief guest for the prize distribution programme.

Workshop on self motivation 

PANJIM: Bougainvilla Hermitage Nachinola recently organized a free open-to-public interactive training session ‘Creating Positivity Within’ for senior citizens. 

It was conducted by Amey Hegde, a motivational speaker and corporate trainer. At the workshop, Mr Hegde engaged the participants in increasing positivity and happiness levels and presented relevant clippings from popular Hindi movies to drive home the importance of developing an ‘Attitude of Gratitude’, focusing on one’s dreams and appreciating people around. The participants were happy to rediscover themselves and make new friends at the venue.

Around 100 seniors from across Goa participated in the workshop. The Directors, Michael and Tomoko Lobo were pleased to learn that the participants were happy. The event proved to be a truly inspiring and uplifting workshop.

Bougainvilla Hermitage, Goa’s premium retirement village, frequently organizes various events beneficial to senior citizens. The event concluded with a healing prayer by Fr Ubaldo from Mumbai. Lunch was also provided to the participants after the workshop.

Amit Majumdar to speak in China, HK

PANJIM: Amit Majumdar of Porvorim and a reputed metallurgist from the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and a hands-on veteran of five decades in the Indian steel industry, has been invited to speak at Metal Bulletin’s ‘China Iron Ore’ conference in Beijing from February 26 to 28 and CRU’s ‘World Steel Conference’ in Hong Kong from March 4 to 6. Both, Metal Bulletin and CRU, are amongst the world’s leading organizations, based in London, doing research and analysis in the metals sector and organizing conferences worldwide. Majumdar will be speaking on ‘The Indian Iron Ore Conundrum ‘– a highly debatable topic not only in India but across the world. 

Dhempe College exam forms 

PANJIM: Dhempe College of Arts and Science, Miramar, has announced that supplementary forms for backlog papers of BA / BSc Second and Fourth Semester, for exams  commencing from April 2, are available at the college office from February 25 to March 2 from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. 

The last date for submission of forms is March 2. Supplementary forms will be accepted along with late fees till March 5. 

TAG’s Meet the Artiste 

PANJIM: Antonio Jose D’Souza popularly, known as Joe de Cavelossim on the tiatr stage, will be the artiste of the month at ‘Meet the Artiste’, a monthly programme organized by Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) on February 22 at 4:30 pm at TAG’s Conference Hall, Campal Trade Centre, Campal, Panjim. All tiatr lovers can attend the function.

Discourses on ‘Stress Reduced Life’

PANJIM: Fr Abraham Painumkal SJ, a Jesuit priest and counsellor, will deliver two discourses on ‘Stress Reduced Life’, the first on February 24, at 4:30 pm at Loyola High School Hall, Margao and on February 28 at 6 pm at Jesuit House, Panjim. They are open to all and free. 

Goa State Pharmacy Council elections

PANJIM: Six registered pharmacists were elected unopposed at the Goa State Pharmacy Council elections for the term from April 1 2013 to March 31, 2018.

Director of FDA and Returning Officer Salim Veljee declared the six pharmacists elected unopposed. They include Raj Xirpati Vaidya, Laxmikant Bhonsle, Rajashree Jirage, Madhusudan Purushottam Joshi, Vallabh Khusali Dessai and Jovem Sebastiao Menezes. 

The returning officer received ten nominations from various registered pharmacists of which four withdrew their nominations, paving the way for the other six.

The pharmacy council consists of six registered pharmacist-members, elected from amongst themselves; five members, of whom at least three shall possess a prescribed degree or diploma in pharmacy or pharmaceutical chemistry or registered pharmacists, nominated by the State Government and one member elected from amongst themselves by the members of each Medical Council or the Council of Medical Registration of the State, as the case may be.

Novenas underway at Old Goa

PANJIM: The feast of the Miraculous Cross, Old Goa, will be celebrated at the Se Cathedral, Old Goa, on February 23 with Masses at 7 am, 8:15 am and solemn High Mass at 10 am. Kanji (pez) will be served after every Mass.

Novenas at the Se Cathedral are as follows: Rosary at 9:15 am, Way of the Cross at 9:30 am and Mass at 10 am. 

On February 22, procession with Way of the Cross from Cross of Nossa Senhora de Luz (Old Goa Chimbel by-pass road) to the Se Cathedral will begin at 9 am.

Anti-tobacco drive

POINGUINIM: An anti-tobacco drive orientation camp will be conducted at Canacona Municipal Council Hall on February 22 from 9 am to 6 pm.

According to Canacona Mamlatdar Sudin Natu, the faculty for the orientation camp will be doctors from the Directorate of Health Services and others in coordination with personnel from the government district and taluka administration.

MES Higher Secondary annual prize distribution

MORMUGAO: The annual prize distribution function of MES Higher Secondary School was organised recently.

Speaking on the occasion, Chartered Accountant and President of past MESITES Jyotendra Kamat, who was the chief guest, congratulated the students for excelling at the Goa Board examination. He advised them to use their thinking power to excel in life. “You all are the pillars of the nation. You have to showcase your values that you have imbibed for it is essential for the survival of the society,” he said.

Student’s Council Chairperson Avita Dias welcomed the gathering, MES HSS Principal Melita Quadros read the annual report for 2012-13, Toshita Pilgankar compered the function, while Students Council General Secretary Shailesh Rajput proposed the vote of thanks.

Ganesh Jayanti at Ganesh Temple 

COLLEM: Various religious and cultural programmes were organised to mark the 17th Ganesh Jayanti of Ganesh Temple at Collem.

Sanvordem MLA Ganesh Gaonkar was the chief guest for the programme, which was organised by the Gokula Pratistan, Collem. 

Five persons felicitated on the occasion were Principal Atmaram Kudachadkar (State award teacher), social worker Raghoba Dessai, Narsinha Prabhu (Best sarpanch award winner), Nivida Nagavenkar, who stood first in Piety HS and first in Marathi in the State in the last Goa Board Exam and Appa Gaonkar, a stage artiste.

P C Narvekar, a Marathi writer from Collem, was the guest of honour. Collem PI Jivaba Dalvi, Pratiksha Gaonkar, Naresh Shigaonkar and Govind Gaonkar were special invitees.

PANJIM: The public of Bardez are hereby informed that the newly erected 200 KVA of M/s Pamela Palms at Tembi, Anjuna, will be test charged on February 22 and associated 11KV single circuit line (0.15kms) will remain charged thereafter. Interference, touching poles, stays, etc or kite flying at the vicinity will be highly dangerous. Hence, the public are requested to keep away from the line and equipment.
