Cars, pollution and public transportation

Several movie stars in the history of Hollywood have flaunted it – Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield, among several others which I will not mention as the reader might start to believe this is my field of expertise.
But with every principle there are exceptions, and a good thing, too. US President-elect Donald Trump might discover the pitfalls of the principle in his desired one point agenda to make America (sorry the USA) great again whatever he means by it. Everything will be done in the interest of the USA – nothing else is important!
A lack of wisdom or a largesse of arrogance? Let’s hope all the countries he will bulldoze in his eagerness to reach his goal will not form an unofficial  coalition whose sole aim will be none other than to destroy the President’s plan. Everyone wants a fair deal, and so do nations. Donald Trump will become US President soon but can he learn?
He appears to be a bad student!
Delhi is probably one of the top three polluted cities in the world if not numero uno. How did it get to be this way? Talking to older people from Delhi who are in the sunset of their lives can be an insightful and rewarding conversation as they have lived long and have memories stretching a while back. They all complain of the over abundance of cars and how getting around is a nightmare at any time of the day or night. When I ask them how did the people who live in Delhi manage to achieve this level of success, the message is clear: Flaunt it if you have it!
We oldies in Goa also have long memories when owning a car was not something trivial but worth talking about in any age group. Today, in the West cars are passé and nothing to write home to mum about as she has known this fact for decades now. The nouveau riche has only started to get a taste of the automobile and is sure flashing the goods.
Flash it if you have it might be the beginning of the end of Goa. The people who live in Delhi have no choice but to breathe in highly polluted air. Too many cars and expensive apartments, and polluted air? Is this the good life?
In a play by a famous playwright, a character who is very proud of his new door bell which was the rage in high society at the time, says “Take a look at its texture, feel it! What a size and what a sound this dong has!” As they say, flaunt it if you have it.
We need trains not to take us to Mumbai or Delhi but to connect all our towns and cities in Goa so we can travel all over Goa comfortably!
Take it from this oldie. If car ownership continues to speed along as is the case these days, Goa will reach a global level of a highly polluted State unless we immediately invest heavily in the development of public transportation. Act now.
Twenty years from now Goans will have no choice but to listen to critics who had warned the people of Goa, as they did in Delhi, but who now say with a smile and great irony: Take a deep breathe!
Flaunt it if you have it can also be a major roadblock to the enjoyment of life.
