They will promise Indian people the sun, the moon and the stars in return for their vote. But after the voting, politicians will disappear and reappear when it is time for the next selection in the ballot box.
Democracy is the world’s best form of government. But it turns out to be the world’s worst form of government when the majority chooses to trample on the rights or the minority or the minority decides to walk over the rights of the majority. In either case, it is with protests and fasts and destruction of private and public property.
In a democracy normally following things happen:
a) Rich politicians dangle a carrot (in cash or kind) to garner votes to get them elected or re-elected at the time of voting.
b) After winning, these politicians accept bribes to recover the money they spent to win election; and the public, are unwillingly forced to give it, to get their legitimate work done faster and enjoy peace and happiness thereafter without harassment from authorities.
c) Corrupt politicians in general, with the exception of few, prove their innocence when found guilty, with money power; they make their money talk, they make everything walk and throw morality out of the window. They bypass all laws, bend them, break them, mould them to their benefit and to the advantage of their friends and relatives and those who grease their palm. In short, in democracy voters and politicians together make the system work or break.
In every situation one has a choice to pick sincere leaders and be happy or to choose the corrupt persons and be miserable. Yes, Democracy can be a hell or heaven according to the voter’s or politician’s attitude. But, every time, the same insincere leaders stand for election.
The solution to such gloomy picture of our democracy is to form laws to ban politician to stand for re-election. If citizens do not bring such a ban, but take the ‘chalta hai’ attitude by sitting like ‘Little Jack-Horner-in-a-corner’, they will remain as fool not only for five years but fools even after every year of election.
