Dreamy Desires

We all dream dreams of seeking satisfaction from materialistic world   wanting wealth; needing name; fantasising fame and craving comfort   which take deep roots within us like fruit producing trees. They motivate us to act upon them. But the soul craves for heavenly bliss.
Modern culture creates desires by advertisement on posters, bill board, TV, radio, etc, which ignites dormant dreams that awaken action which could be good or bad. Therefore, one should examine, what goes into one’s head or what comes before one’s eyes, whether they are morally right or wrong; for it is ethically erroneous to do evil, even for a good purpose.
We all try to fulfill our desires. But with fulfillment of one desire, many other goals crop up, for example: when the wish for a job is satisfied, it is replaced by the longing for a promotion; when one’s want to have a house is fulfilled, then one’s heart yearns for a car; all these attractions, appears like weeds in the garden of our mind. No matter how much we pluck them, there are always more. The more the greedy person’s wants are fulfilled; the more wishes he craves to satisfy. But, when one’s wishes are unfulfilled, one fills frustrated, jealous and angry which often, makes one behave like matchsticks bursting into flames when it strikes the matchbox’s side.
We have to control our worldly wants for self-aggrandisement, especially when it is at the cost of another’s well-being. Uncontrolled wishes spread like wildfire leading to misery and downfall; like a small spark falling on a blade of dry grass causing a huge blaze that burns down an entire forest.
Also, when we get what we want, we develop an attachment for them. Say for example, if one is obsessed with success of power in politics or in sports or in any other field for that matter; and one goes on climbing the ladder of success beyond the last step without looking, then one falls flat on one’s face.
It becomes like the snake and ladder game making one fall to the lowest level from the top of the ladder. The snake of attachment or snake of obsession becomes a pathological fondness that brings one right down when one does not know to say enough is enough; when one does not know to hang up one’s boots.
Psychologists say that desires are man’s natural tendencies. Therefore, they should be allowed to flow freely. Forced suppression of our wishes cannot wipe our wants completely but allows them to make our subconscious mind a home to unfulfilled longings; then the mind looks for an opportune time to surface and burst out in an explosive form.
Human hearts hunger for many things. The solution to the problem is neither, suppression of wishful thinking, nor free flow of daydreams; but embracing pure desires of creative impulses and spiritual refinement which alone push us on the path of inner perfection towards God. Our desire for joy can be satisfied only in God which the soul seeks. How can any temporary earthly pleasures of the world compete with eternal happiness of heaven? We should find the right balance in every area of our life. Pure thoughts, kind words, and noble actions free from external show to keep the right and the healthy balance of life. We build our own destiny, every day, with our desires.
