Work on power line completed
PORVORIM: The work to lay the 18-km underground power line from Tivim to Porvorim has been completed and while one cable will cater to 24,000 consumers of Porvorim, the second cable will provide power supply to consumers of Saligao and Candolim.
Speaking to Herald, the officials of Porvorim sub station informed that two separate cables have been laid from Tivim to Porvorim, at a cost of Rs 13.4 crore.
“One cable will cater to the requirement of 24,000 consumers from Porvorim, while the other cable is for power supply to Saligao and Candolim,” added an official.
“There were frequent power disruptions in Porvorim, Saligao and adjoining villages due to snapping of old power supply lines, insulator failures, etc. The situation was worst during monsoons,” added the official.
“The Electricity Department decided to lay an underground cable. Since there were some objections from farmers to lay cables in their fields, the work suffered some setback,” said the official.
“Once the testing is over, residents of Porvorim, Saligao and Candolim will get better power supply even during the rains. The department has decided to add an additional 10 MVA power transformer to Porvorim sub station to provide reliability to power supply,” added the official.
Mazania devasthan gets new president
VALPOI: Prof Shaikh Parvez AL-Usmani was elected unopposed as president of the managing committee of Mazania De Mesqueta E Babal Pir Devasthan, Sanquelim.
Parvez is an associate professor and head, Department of Physics, at DM’s College at Assagao.
At the recent election, other members elected on the committee were Adam Shah Muzawar (attorney), Shaikh M Hanif (treasurer), Fakir Shah Muzawar (secretary) and Hussein Aga, Shaikh Parvez Gani, Shaikh Farhan Bizli and Iqbal Muzawar Shah (members).
Foundation stone for anti-erosion wall
CALANGUTE: Water Resources Minister Dayanand Mandrekar recently laid the foundation stone for the anti-sea erosion wall at Baga beach.
The estimated cost of the project is Rs 44 lakh and the project will be completed before monsoon.
Speaking on the occasion, Mandrekar claimed that since his tenure as water resources minister, he has sanctioned a lot of files for the villages of Calangute and Arpora-Nagoa.
In his speech, Lobo requested Mandrekar to take up developmental works in his constituency like construction of nullahs, de-silting of ponds and protection walls on priority basis.
Arpora-Nagoa Sarpanch Sushma Nagvekar, Deputy Sarpanch Joseph Fernandes, Arpora-Nagoa Panchas Cleofas Fernandes, Agostinho D’Souza, Rohan Redkar and Sakharam Naik, Panchayat Secretary Rui Cardozo, Assistant engineer Rawool Shetye and other officials were present on the occasion.
Rangoli artist wins award
BICHOLIM: Rangoli artist, Arjun Parab, from Gaonkarwada-Bicholim secured the Nobel India International Award 2013 given by All India Art, Literature and Culture Academy reward, Wardha-Maharastra.
It may be stated that the Academy gives rewards to persons in various fields for their contribution at National and International levels.
Parab had contributed in a great deal for the up-liftment of Rangoli as art. Till date, he has organised several workshops not only in Goa but several other states. He has also taught the art to many artists from outside the country. The award will be given on October 2, 2013, at Wardha. Parab has also bagged several state and national awards in this field.
Traders told to issue bills
PONDA: S G Korgaonkar, commissioner, Department of Commercial Taxes, has urged traders to issue bills to customers and has also requested Ponda Tax Practitioners Association to advise the traders in this regard.
Korgaonkar was speaking during the seminar on ‘commercial tax updates’ organised by the Ponda Tax Practitioners Association in collaboration with the Department of Commercial Taxes at Shigmotsav hall, Commerce Trade Centre, Ponda.
“We have been receiving complaints from customers from various places stating that traders are not issuing bills. I request traders to issue bills to the customers and even the tax practitioners should advise traders,” said Korgaonkar.
“Our department has introduced various measures to ease filing of returns, etc. If there any suggestions or changes needed or any issues, then the tax practitioners and traders can write to us and we will try attend to it as soon as possible,” added Korgaonkar.
