First Day at School

Summer vacations are over. It’s back to school for the children as most of the schools in Goa reopen today, June, 6 for the new academic year.

The transition from holidays back to the school routine can be very taxing to the children as well as the parents and not forgetting the teachers. For the children it will be back to the everyday chores of getting up early to get ready before the school-bus comes to pick them up. But not all children are grumpy about going to school some love to go to a totally new classroom with probably many new friends to make and new teachers of course. Children probably feel excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new school. Luckily, these worries only stick around for a little while. Here are some tips for the students to make the first day in school a pleasant experience.
Pay close attention so you’ll know if you need to raise your hand to ask a question and what the rules are about visiting the restroom. You might already know a lot of kids in your classes on the first day. But it’s a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don’t. Make the first move and you’ll be glad you did and so will your new friend! Seeing friends you haven’t seen in a while can make the first day a good one.
Most teachers kick off the school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the stuff you’ll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules so everyone knows what’s allowed and what’s not. Some teachers too could have butterflies in the stomach on the first day of the new academic year. Teachers need to plan their schedule in school for the first few days. They should pretend that it is just another day at school. Most importantly enjoy while carrying out the task at hand.
The first day at school can be tough for parents as well, but with a little preparation it’ll be easier for parents to cope. It helps if one’s child has the practical skills that schools. “He or she should know how to sit still, wait and listen,” says an expert in parenting. For parents during the first few weeks of school, it’s essential to keep communicating with your child and take care to notice signs that things aren’t going well. It’s not uncommon for a child in their second week not to want to go to school after the excitement of the first week has worn off. That is when the parents should give a word of encouragement to the child and instill in him the excitement of going to school all over again.
Mercifully in Goa school commences at the same time it pours or probably will rain a few days into the new academic year. Children have fun going to school on a rainy day. After all they get to wear the new rainwear and some could even enjoy getting wet in the rain.
All said and done it is the start of a new academic year. As children look forward to spend the year studying, playing, making new friends and enjoying since school life comes once in a lifetime.
