The resounding victory of the Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi has suddenly revitalised everyone. There is hope that mighty forces can be brought down, the common man still has a say, secularism prevails and religious divides are shunned and more importantly issues of governance and accountability is what the country needs.
So taking lessons from the victory in Delhi and observing the state of affairs in our beloved state of Goa, can we unite to elect leaders who are non divisive, non partisan, non communal and who will work with the interests of the people and State in mind foregoing their self interests? Can we set aside our differences and ensure governance and accountability is foremost on the agenda?
What is the kind of Goa we envision? Because we are at a cusp in history where if we choose the wrong leaders, we will see the effects of their policies 10 years down the line and it might be too late. We need leaders who will take us forward for the next 50 years and preserve our unique heritage and culture without compromising on development and prosperity.
So the Goa I want is one where we have world class infrastructure, education hubs, technology parks, quality hotels at all levels, improved sanitation and solid waste management and a vibrant social and cultural scene which retains our proud Goan heritage.
Fortunately for us, Goa is a small state so we can choose to emulate other tourist dependant city/states abroad like Singapore where the government has managed to create a holistic plan to keep it top of mind recall for tourists.
Recently Goa made it to the list of the top 6 nightlife spots in the world. Great! But can we cope with the influx of tourists and provide them with the best experience? Can we sustain our spot in the top 10 destinations of the world?
As for the transportation system, we are handcuffed by the taxi mafia. The government should step in and provide a transportation system that is efficient, clean, safe and affordable.
There are many Goans living overseas. Invite them to invest in Goa either through money or with their knowledge and skills. They can surely bring in the much needed world class focus required. They can also mentor our youth. Remember the youth are our future and they have played a decisive role in this election.
