There have been demands by various persons of eminence including Union Ministers for an anti-conversion law in India to curb forced conversions. A law curbing conversions straight away appears prime facie to be unconstitutional as the Indian Constitution guarantees to all its citizens the fundamental right to practice and propagate any religion of their choice. However, conversions which are brought out by using force, bribes or treacherous means need to be strongly condemned. In order to restrict such treacherous conversions, a law would be welcome. However, the law must be about regulating and not banning conversions.
