He minced no words
Your news ‘Malik launches scathing attack on PM Modi’ (Herald, August 23) is much appreciated. The press today has gone timid, and the voice of bold, upright man and woman is rarely reported. If we had more governors like Satya Pal Malik, we would be proud Indians. True to his name, he spoke the truth, truth as it is and minced no words.

Goans demand justice for Siddhi Naik
The CBI think Goans are fools and are taking us for a jolly ride. It’s high time Goans demand justice for our daughter Siddhi Naik, cause how easily can CBI even think about closing down a case which has given goosebumps to the entire State. A innocent girl’s half naked body was found on one of the beaches of Goa and all the authorities and departments are taking it so lightly.
It’s been a year now. Can anyone put himself in the shoes of the poor, broken down Siddhi’s father and family? It is indeed so shameful and disgrace to each and every one of us, where justice is not prevailed to Siddhi and her family. We must all get together and no leave no stone unturned. There are so many loopholes in this case and we can get so many clues. Unless the CBI is under the pressure of some political influence trying to shield the guilty. Goans will never allow this to happen.
My humble request to the CBI is to kindly investigate the entire case from scratch, without any political interference and punish the guilty. Let us all think about Siddhi Naik’s father and her family.

Women’s power at village level
The sarpanchas and deputy sarpanchas in all 186 village panchayats were elected on Monday. What comes as a pleasant surprise is that in several of the village panchayats women have become either sarpanchas or deputy sarpanchas or both. In addition, many women have been elected as panchas. This is a positive step towards women empowerment in governance at the village level.
As per a study, it has been found that women make better leaders because they seek to develop others and listen more effectively, in addition to generally thinking more outside-the-box than their male counterparts. Compared to male leaders, female leaders are more likely to attend to the personal needs of the people and be open to new ideas and opinions of others.
Gender equality and women’s empowerment are both human rights and are necessary for achieving comprehensive, unbiased, and sustainable development. Women’s political participation results in tangible gains for democracy, including greater responsiveness to citizen needs, increased cooperation across party and ethnic lines, and more sustainable peace. Mentoring and training programs prepare women for political work and enhance their political skills. Local-level positions equip women with the skills necessary for higher levels of public office and careers in regional and national politics. Better representation will ensure women’s voices are heard and their issues fairly recognised.
Studies have shown that women are more likely than men to address women’s interests. Representation of women in governance at the village level is an important step towards their empowerment.

Young Grandmaster deserves accolades
Young Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa deserves accolades for outwitting world No 1 Magnus Carlsen 4-2 in Miami’s FTX Crypto Cup final round. The triumph enabled the Indian to take his tally to 15 and finish second behind the Norwegian. Praggnanandhaa has been in glorious form this year and had twice earlier beaten the world champion in online events. He was also part of India ‘B’ that recently bagged a bronze in the 44th chess Olympiad in Chennai. Carry on, Praggnanandhaa. You have made us proud.

The Gujarat rapist and murderers
Narendra Modi is one of the most powerful politicians in India followed by the Home Minister Amit Shah. Twenty years back both these leaders were ruling Gujarat when eleven men raped a five month pregnant woman Bilkis Bano and killed her three-year-old daughter and seven relatives.
No doubt that many people have been acquitted and given clean chits but the release of the eleven rapists and murderers under the leadership of Narendra Modi poses a very serious question and doubt whether the PM is really worthy of the most important post in the country where thousands are killed under your watch and now you release them also under your watch? Hope the people of India will open their eyes at least now.

Casteism, India’s biggest bane’
This has reference to the Edit ‘Casteism, India’s biggest bane’ (Herald, 22 August). There is this vast pool of stagnant water where mosquitoes breed and spread a disease called malaria. And what do we do? Spend crores and crores of rupees to improve anti-malaria tablets but leave the socrosant pool of water alone. Now how can casteism disappear when no one dares to empty the pool. Whether one likes it or not , the pool of stagnant water is nothing but brahmanism.

FIFA ban hurts India
My deep hurt feeling on one side because India is banned by FIFA from participation in all the football activities under FIFA and shockingly that includes the hosting of World Cup for women Under-17 for undue influence from third parties” while on the other side I congratulate FIFA for adhering to its system and principles of not to waiver in application of its rules and regulations, as per its tradition.
FIFA it must be known, is the best governed organisation even it is better governed than the United Nations and the UN membership is lower than that of the FIFA. Regarding its strict functioning, I am taking you in the seventies in Chile where with the plot allegedly created by CIA to overthrow the Communist Government of Allende which in all fairness came up to rule Chile thru the power of Ballot as against the power of Bullet and most of the followers of Allende were arrested and kept them as prisoners at the Santiago Stadium.
Subsequently Soviet Russia was supposed to play its qualifying match for the next World Cup at the same Stadium but on the strength of its nuclear weaponry the Russians refused to play on the said Stadium and tried to frighten the FIFA with the intention of forcing FIFA to change the already allotted ground.
When Russia refused to listen, FIFA threw out Russia from participation in the World Cup. The management of Indian soccer is in the mess because politicians who are involved in corruption and even imprisoned earlier are allowed to rule our football. These politicians either at top level or lower levels should be debarred from running the affairs of our soccer. In Goa the soccer standard is receding because of the messy situation all around.
