It appears that most MPs are more concerned about their wellbeing, than that of their constituents who elected them to represent them in Parliament and address their concerns. The demand for a whopping 100 percent hike in salaries and 75 percent hike in pensions is not only outrageous but highly unreasonable. It is astounding to hear of demands by MPs for 100 percent hike in salaries. Government staff and public sector employees get 50 percent of their last year’s average salary as pension, that too after working for 33 years and more. The MPs demand for pension at 75 percent of pay is ridiculous.
As representatives of their constituents, who include farmers, factory workers and workers in the unorganized sector, they should keep in mind that a large number of these people are poor, homeless and hungry. It is imperative that our MPs stop the clamour for unreasonable increases in salaries, allowances and pensions.
While reasonable hikes for MPs can be considered, they should leave the matter to be resolved by a committee set up by the government. A parliamentary panel consisting of fellow MPs cannot decide in the matter of its own pay and allowances. And they should also demonstrate greater sensitivity at a time of difficulty and economic distress, by putting their demands on the backburner for now.
