Speed thrills, but kills

Much has been debated regarding making helmets compulsory effective October. Whilst the bad conditions of roads, poor visibility of speed breakers, stray cattle in the middle of roads are equally to be blamed, it is the speed that is responsible for more accidents as there is no proper sense of riding or driving.

The case in point is a month back as I was proceeding on my scooter from the Basilica of Bom Jesus to my home in Bainguinim. A speeding delivery van overtook me and in order to avoid the oncoming car, came on my way. The result, I was hit by the rear end of the van and dropped unconscious. With God’s grace I was miraculously saved as I was wearing a helmet, yet received six stitches on my forehead, three on my elbow and several bruises on the right side of my shoulder.
A sense of proper driving should be inculcated in all drivers both two-wheelers and four wheelers who are constantly overtaking even at speed breakers, cross roads and circles.
The authorities should heavily clamp down on all offenders to instill a sense of road discipline. Let us strive to save our life and those of others by not regretting later.
