Your editorial ‘Why we are a policeles state’ (Feb 19) is right. Of late Goa seems to have become a policeless state, where the law and order machinery has almost broken down. And thieves and other criminals are making hay while the sun shines. I do not know why the police, who are paid to perform their duty, act in such a careless manner and do not listen to the people when they are approached for their grievances. There is only tall talk by the police brass that everything is under control, but the reality is different and frightening.
This year there have already been many theft cases reported. Our citizens cannot live in peace. They are hounded by the thought that they are insecure because the police don’t care for their safety. Aren’t they entitled to have a secure life, knowing that the police are always around and will perform their duty? But this does not happen.
There is so much fear in people’s minds when they lock their homes and go out. The other day, a couple went to bring back their ward from school, and in just a span of an hour miscreants had ransacked their house, and fled with the booty.
The police should organise a proper network for the security of citizens, and keep a hawk’s eye on criminals. These criminals are aware of the absence of the police beat in areas where they operate. This gives them the confidence to strike.
The police brass must coordinate with the beat police and make them accountable for any miss on their part. Any lapse on their part must be taken seriously.
