In the past, some religions chose not to shake hands with science and this almost brought those religions to their own graves. Today, science openly disowns religion, and consequently materialism, the height of its perfection, is groaning under its own weight. Neither of them can stand on its own if they want to bring happiness into society.
The achievements in production, the efficiency in distribution, the victory over nature, etc. cannot in themselves meet the demands of life and assure a greater share of human happiness, unless they also recognize the nobler values of healthy living which religion preaches. Unless we pursue the teachings of self-integration, the community, can never move into an era of joy and healthy love.
Man has so far failed to discover that system of perfect governance where each citizen could bloom forth into maximum happiness. This failure is precisely due to his ignorance of the real meaning of life. We do not realize that the external pattern of objects do not consistently remain long in any given scheme. The pattern changes eternally, so do the mind of the individuals. In this changing situation, to maintain equilibrium is an utopian dream. Therefore, all revolutionary changes for real progress are bound to fail, so long as they ignore the “subject” in man, constituted of the mental, intellectual and spiritual personalities.
The youth have the daring to plan, the irresistible urge and energy to act, the enthusiasm to conceive, along with their natural impatience at all the defects of our existence. But to effectively channelize these resources of the youth, they must be trained to study the problems of life and to evaluate each of them correctly. This calls for a special mental balance in each and an unerring intellectual self-application. With such a balanced mind and intellect alone, can the youth arrive at creative ideas and judgments.
We have our body, mind and intellect as our three equipments through which we experience life. These three instruments have their own distinct characteristics in each person, and the personality expressed, when life throbs through them, is therefore distinct. My total world of experience is made up of world of objects, the world of feelings and the world of ideas. We must know the art of tuning these instruments properly so that through them we may have the proper experience of the world. Scientists admit that the knowledge of the outer world is their strength. So too, spiritual masters declare that the knowledge of our inner content is necessary to live our life purposefully, and through that knowledge we can come to establish the right relationship with our world.
The world outside is recognized and experienced by the individual never as such, but only as interpreted by his own mind and intellect. To a scientist, the world is an expression of forces, just as to a lover, the world is full of music and poetry.
