Murder most Foul

A father rapes his own daughter to satisfy his lust, parents and other siblings kill their daughter/sister to safeguard the ‘honour’ of their family, a boss sexually harasses his employee. These are only some of the many instances of base crimes committed by so-called ‘humans’.
What are humans turning into? What makes people commit such hideous crimes? The most recent case of the alleged murder of Sheena Bora makes one’s blood curdle. Newspaper and television reports keep reporting fresh twists and turns to the story and the matter keeps getting murkier.
As things stand, Sheena was allegedly murdered by her mother, Indrani Mukherjea, in 2012. Indrani, along with one of her earlier husbands – Sanjeev Khanna – and her driver – Shyam Rai – allegedly murdered her daughter. The 24-year-old Sheena was allegedly strangled in a car. Then her body was burnt and dumped at a forest in Raigad, about 84 kms from Mumbai. Her purported remains were found a month later and were buried by the police, which treated the body as unclaimed. For three years Indrani told her family and friends that Sheena had shifted to the US. Earlier Indrani referred to Sheena as her sister instead of as her daughter.
It is bewildering, to say the least, trying to track down the role played by Indrani Mukherjea in this whole sordid drama. We begin to wonder what sort of wife and mother was she. What sort of a family life did she lead? Did her children, Sheena and Mikail Bora, matter to her at all? Did she not care enough for them to give them a stable family life? Why did she refer to Sheena as her sister, instead of as her daughter? How could a mother do away with her daughter in such a brutal fashion and for what reason?
We must always remember that crime never pays. The long arm of the law will sooner or later get to you. And before long you will pay the price for it. The latest is that Indrani has confessed her crime. Will the burnt skeletal remains of Sheena’s body be able to provide crucial evidence for the case so that the criminals can be pinned down? Will the money trail help investigators to tighten the noose around the criminals’ necks?
A mother-child relationship is one of the most sacred and enduring relationships that exist among humans. If Indrani is proven guilty of murdering her daughter, it will shake up the faith children have in their parents, especially their mothers. But at least there will be a closure to the case and Sheena’s soul will get eternal peace.
