No beef? Eat Soya chunks

Of late beef has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. There has been a shortage of this protein-rich food which forms a staple for many Goans. The famous beef-practice and the tasty croquets are conspicuous by their absence in the fast-food shops and Goan tea-shops. Goans love their beef. It is a pity that because of the steady increase in the price of beef, beef dishes are slowly but steadily disappearing from the dining table and the wedding buffet-spreads. Is there an alternative food item for beef lovers? It seems there is one in the form of Soya chunks. Obviously vegetarians do not consume meat and meat products, which leaves them looking for alternatives to meet their nutritional needs. They have found their answer in Soya chunks. As per a study conducted by health experts, Soya chunks contain protein which exceeds the amount of protein found in non-vegetarian counterparts such as eggs, meats, and milk. It is considered as an excellent replacement for all meat-based proteins. Since animal proteins have high content of saturated fats, it is not advisable for those looking to slim down. Soy protein found in Soya Chunks is highly beneficial for children as it promotes strong bones and teeth. These chunks are a wonderful option for those on a vegetarian diet. Soya chunks are made from soy beans and they work well as meat substitutes. These come in the form of regular chunks, mini chunks and granules, and can be used in many ways. The nutritional value is similar to meat in some areas and different in others. Soya chunks are rich in nutritional value and their texture is similar to meat products like beef. If properly prepared it is probably difficult to tell the difference between Soya chunks and been pieces when present in the same dish. Soya has several benefits as it is very nutritious. What separates meat alternatives from actual meats is their carbohydrate contents. Regular meat is carbohydrate-free, but Soya chunks contain a high amount. This is because they derive from beans, which are carbohydrate containing foods. The calories in any food are derived from protein, carbohydrates and fat. Because Soya chunks have only a negligible amount of fat, the calories come from the carbohydrates and protein. It is a known fact that fatty foods increase the cholesterol level in the blood. The high level of cholesterol can block the arteries circulating blood to the heart muscles which can ultimately lead to a heart-attack and death. Hence it can be said that Soya chunks is a healthy alternative to red meat like beef. Iron is an electrolyte mineral needed for oxygen transport in the body. Being deficient in iron can lead to physical weakness, fatigue and a compromised immune system. Soya chunks have a very high concentration of iron. One serving of the chunks provides more than 100 percent of the recommended daily intake of iron. Calcium is another electrolyte that helps strengthen bones and teeth and also aids in muscle contractions. Soya chunks contain a considerable amount of calcium. Soya chunks are initially dry. They need to be reconstituted in water, which causes them to become spongy. Plain Soya chunks do not have much flavor at all, but they absorb sauces, spices and flavorings well. Soya chunks can be used to make stew, soup, curry and masala dishes, salads etc.
