VASCO: A girl has complained of receiving derogatory, vulgar and unwanted SMS on her cell phone.

According to Verna Police, the girl complained that she received derogatory, vulgar and unwanted SMS on her cell phone on Tuesday. PI Rajesh Kumar is investigating the case.
One held for attempting to snatch bag
CALANGUTE: Calangute Police arrested a native of Karnataka on charges of trying to snatch a bag from a foreigner at Calangute market on Wednesday.
According to sources, the accused, Sadanand Nayak, presently residing at Arpora, tried to snatch the foreigner’s bag containing purse and other valuables. The foreigner raised an alarm which prompted the accused to run away.
However, the locals on hearing the scream for help nabbed the accused and gave him a sound thrashing. The locals later handed him over to Calangute Police.
Person robbed at Pernem
PERNEM: A resident of Dandoswadda-Mandrem has accused a couple of robbing her of Rs 64,000 in cash at Pernem. According to Pernem Poilce, Divya Pokhle complained that the couple confined her and robbed cash of Rs 64,000 and one mobile phone at knife point. PSI Vijaykumar Chodankar is investigating the case.
Juvenile held for stealing
PORVORIM: Porvorim Police nabbed a juvenile on charges of stealing water taps worth about Rs 50,000 at Alto Porvorim.
According to Porvorim Police, Asterio D’Souza from Alto Porvorim complained that the juvenile entered his house by breaking the rear window door and decamped with water taps worth about Rs 50,000.
Police further informed that the juvenile was caught red handed by D’Souza while running away. The juvenile is admitted to Apna Ghar at Merces. PSI Vilesh Durbhatkar is investigating the case.
Man drowns at Kalay
CURCHOREM: The body of a 53-year-old resident of Torlemoll-Kalay was fished out from the river at Kalay. According to Curchorem Police, Maruthi Yadav was reported missing since Monday afternoon. The deceased’s son stated that some passers by had seen Yadav at the Kalay Railway station at about 12:30 pm on Monday. Police further informed that when Yadav’s son, along with some locals, went to the river where the deceased used to go to take a dip, he found his father’s clothes. A search operation was conducted and the man’s body was fished out. The post-mortem report indicated that death was due to drowning.
Cheating case registered
MARGAO: The Maina Curtorim police on Wednesday registered offence under section 420 IPC, cheating against Pravin Bhair, resident of Nuvem. Police sources informed that the alleged accused who was requested to write a cheque by Vasant Pednekar, Nuvem is said to have taken away a blank cheque from ICIC Bank, Margao cheque book and enchased and withdrawn Rs 27,000 from Pednekar account by forging signature. No arrest has been made and investigation is in progress.
Rock In Goa at Verna on March 23
MARGAO: “Rock In Goa” organized and coordinated by Rockbugs, Goa will be held on March 23, at Gawin’s Verna (Quinta de Valadares) Goa from 2 pm onwards. This year, Rock in Goa will be clubbed with a super bike exhibition called “Rockers Bike Fest” where Vintage bikes, Super Bikes and Modified Bikes will be showcased at the event.
“This event will help the bikers meet likeminded people wherein they can share their know-how and experiences, while enjoying the heavy line up of music from Bad Blood being the host band. Other bands include Noxious Ire, Paul Challakal, True Deception, Loose Noose, TNT, Vesuvius, Afflictions Eclipsed, and a novel attraction, a Konkani Rock band,” informed Pravas Ravi. He said that “Rock In Goa” in its true sense will be rocking this state as the mother of rock music in India, a band that has put India’s name on the global charts ““Indus Creed” will be on stage live in performance, the band made rock history in India when MTV flew down GNR guitar player Slash to jam with Indus Creed at the channel’s launch. They also performed with Bon Jovi to over 40,000 people in Mumbai. The band won numerous awards for their music videos, including the Asia-wide MTV Viewers’ Choice Award for their song “Pretty Child” which was also ranked the 9th-best video that year, competing with the likes of Madonna, Pearl Jam and Michael Jackson”, he added.
Goan tiatrist Patrick Fernandes dies
PANJIM: Well-known tiatrist Patrick Fernandes from Senaulim, Verna, expired in the United Kingdom on Tuesday after a brief illness.
Patrick was a versatile actor, who won the hearts of audiences with his outstanding performances, in the State before he shifted base to UAE and subsequently to the United Kingdom.
While the audience admired Patrick for his acting abilities, his colleagues in the tiatr fraternity loved him for his jovial and loving nature. Tiatrist Roseferns expressed shock over the death. “Patrick was not only a member of my troupe, but he was like one of our family members,” he mentioned and added, “In his death, the Konkani stage has lost a sincere and talented artist.”
President of the TAG Prince Jacob while expressing his grief over Patrick’s demise described him as an excellent human being besides being a good actor and a singer. “Besides being a member of my troupe for many seasons, he was my close friend right from the days we both acted together in Rosefern’s Dramatic Troupe” he recalled.
Patrick is remembered for his brilliant performance in Dev Vo Denvchar written and directed by Roseferns and also for his unique style of singing the opening chorus in the tiatr Ghantt.
Other members of the tiatr fraternity also echoed similar sentiments over the sudden demise of the noted tiatrist, who was not seen much in action over the last few years due to his personal commitments.
Patrick is survived by his wife Divina and Daughters Evita and Lianza. The funeral date will be announced once his mortal remains are flown to Goa from the United Kingdom.
Rose Garden School holds annual day
Panjim: The annual day of Rose Garden School, Alto Porvorim was celebrated recently with great pomp and enthusiasm.
Dilip Parulekar, Minister for Tourism, Women and Child Development, was the chief guest for the function. Sandeep Bandodkar, Sarpanch, Pilerne Panchayat and K G Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director, GKB Ophthalmics Pvt Ltd were the guests of honour. S G Chodankar, Principal of Rose Garden School and Nishakant Assnodkar, PTA President, were the other dignitaries on the dais.
S G Chodankar, Principal of the school, requested the minister and other authorities to help the school for further extension and growth.
Prize distribution was done by the chief guest and other dignitaries. The programme was followed by a wonderful, colourful cultural programme with the theme ‘100 years of Indian Cinema’.
Kelly Dias (Std IV) was awarded the best student of the year. Apurva Chodankar and Sushmita Chodankar compered the programme and Nishakant Assnodkar gave the vote of thanks. It was indeed a wonderful evening.
Goa pension scheme for seafarers
PANJIM: The Goa Welfare / Pension Scheme for Seafarers is being launched by the Chief Minister at a function to be held at Ravindra Bhavan on March 24 at 10:30 am.
The first batch of beneficiaries will receive certificates on that day. All 270 beneficiaries have been informed by post and have been requested to be present. The remaining applications are being scrutinized and the second batch will be given certificates in April 2013.
Subsequently, all remaining beneficiaries will also get the pension certificates at a later date which is to be announced. Efforts will be made to clear the lot by May 2013 so that all seamen eligible for the scheme get their pension by May-end.
Only those seamen recipients of letters are listed to receive the pension certificates and therefore are requested to be present at the function at Ravindra Bhavan Margao, to be presided by the Chief Minister of Goa on March 24.
World Disabled Day observed
PANJIM: The Management and Residents of Bougainvilla Hermitage Retirement Village, Nachinola, observed ‘World Disabled Day’ on March 19 at St Xavier’s Academy, Old Goa, a government recognized school for mentally and physically challenged children.
Speaking on the occasion, Bougainvilla resident, Julie Linnavuori said, “Being differently abled is not a curse, they don’t need sympathy. What they need is love and support from all of us. It has been realized that majority of differently abled persons can lead a normal life if they have effective access to rehabilitation services, which would include early identification, intervention, education, vocational training, employment opportunities and the availability of aids and appliances. The Government of Goa has introduced a lot of schemes for the disabled and challenged children, which can be availed by them.”
Later, the Bougainvilla family along with its residents presented breakfast plates, a tea kettle, milk cartons, health drinks and biscuits to the school. The students presented their creative abilities by showing craft and paintings painstakingly prepared by them. It was truly a fulfilling experience for both seniors and children.
Our Lady of Seven Dolours Feast
PANJIM: The traditional feast of Our Lady of Seven Dolours will be celebrated on March 22 at the St Thomas Chapel, Panjim. The Mass, followed by Way of the Cross will be at 7 am while the solemn High Mass with Motets and Singing of Veronica will be at 5:30 pm. The Chapel will be open from 6:30 am to 9:30 pm for the public veneration of the statues of Christ, Our Lady of Seven Dolours and the Holy Cross.
Entrepreneurship Awareness camp
PANJIM: A two day camp was held at Margao Govt ITI, on March 13 and 14 by Agnel Entrepreneurship Development Institute Verna, on the topic ‘Entrepreneurship Awareness’.
The camp enlightened the trainees about various Government aided schemes available to start new ventures. Various group activities were conducted to give practical knowledge of the functioning of the enterprise and explain its benefits.
Summer Camp at Margao
PANJIM: Samrat Sports Club, Margao will hold its mega 17th annual summer camp for children at Junta Quarters Cultural Club, Pajifond from 9 am to 12 noon from April 8 to 21.
The camp is for children of 5 to 14 years. It’ll include drawing, dancing, singing, industrial visits, train and bullock cart ride, fun maths and science, dramatics, sky watch through a telescope and personality development programmes.

Benefit concert at Kala Academy
PANJIM: Child’s Play (India) Foundation will present the Bager Trio in a benefit concert at the Kala Academy auditorium on April 2 at 6.30 pm. Donation passes are available at Furtados music stores in Panjim and Margao. The ensemble is formed by Jonathan Bager (flute) and his sons Jeremy (bassoon) and Frederic (piano).
Language courses
PANJIM: Basic Konkani and Portuguese language short term courses will be conducted at Communicare Trust, Dona Paula, from April 1 to 30.
