Breast cancer awareness camp held
PANJIM: United Club of Utorda conducted a breast cancer awareness, detection and treatment medical camp at the school hall on September 29. The camp was conducted by Dr Rajesh T Patil and Sr Eliza Rodrigues with assistance of Dr Arya, Dr Joffra, Dr Shyanne and Dr Prajyoti all of Goa Medical College, Bambolim. Over 270 women were examined. Sr Ulorica Fernandes, Sr Juliet Fernandes and Sr Precy Pereira were coordinators of the camp. Agnelo Pereira, President of the Club, Trindade Fernandes and Praxedes Fernandes were also present.

Bishop to open fest of Gandhian ideas
PANJIM: Archbishop-Patriarch Filipe Neri Ferrao will inaugurate the Festival of Gandhian Ideas, promoted by the Council for Social Justice and Peace in collaboration with Peaceful Society on October 5 at the Don Bosco School Hall, Panjim at 5 pm.
The inaugural lecture on the topic ‘Gandhiji’s views on Morality in Public Life’ will be delivered by Dr Ramjee Singh, former vice-chancellor of Jain Vishva Bharati University and former director of the Institute of Gandhian Studies.
Dr Singh participated in the freedom movement of India in 1942 under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi and also suffered imprisonment for 21 months when the Indian government had suppressed all civil and political rights and imposed emergency in 1975-77.
The festival will be a series of lectures every Saturday of October and will conclude on November 9.
Mental Health Week from October 7
PANJIM: The Mental Health Week will be celebrated by the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour, Bambolim from October 7 to 12. Inaugural function will be held on October 8, at the hands of Minister for Health Laxmikant Parsekar, at 10.30 am in the Conference Hall, IPHB, Bambolim.
The exhibition-cum-sale of products prepared by patients undergoing treatment at the occupational therapy unit will be begin on October 7.
Special programmes will be organized for the indoor and OPD patients. Lectures, group discussions, singing competition, painting competition, games, etc will also be held.
Anti-tobacco rally held
PANJIM: The students of Saviour of the World High School, Loutolim organized a rally this week to create awareness among the people about the harmful effects of tobacco and its products.
The rally started from the school premises with students holding placards and displaying various message and shouting slogans, raised awareness of the harmful effects of tobacco. They went around the Loutolim market, Big Foot and Loutolim Primary Health Centre and culminated at school premises.
India expo opens at Taleigao
PANJIM: India expo, the life style shopping festival exhibition is underway at Community Hall, Taleigao. This is the first exhibition in Panjim presented by Orange Couches the premium furniture store from Mumbai. There are over 90 stalls in the exhibition with products like Orange Couches ~ the branded household furniture, from Mumbai, lazy bags, ovel furniture, Italian blanket, zatpat sofa, food, water heaters, sewing machines, induction cookers and a variety of other products including dress material, paintings, bags, shoes, health care products, etc. The exhibition will be open to the public till October 6 from 10.30 am to 9 pm.
Nathan is MFG chairman
PANJIM: Nathan Chowgule was elected as the chairman of the Mineral Foundation of Goa at its 12th annual general meeting held on September 27. The other elected office-bearers for the year 2013-2015 are Narayan Bandekar (vice chairman), Pramod Unde (secretary), Madhukar Mallya (treasurer). The elected members are Shivanand Salgaocar and P K Mukherjee.
Meet the author on October 10
PANJIM: Goa Konkani Lekhak Sangh has organized a meet the author literary programme ~ Lekhak Tumche Bhettek. The programme will be held at Matrushaya hall at Dhavli-Ponda on October 10 at 5 pm. Emminent Konkani writer Harsha Shetye from Margao will interact with students of Matrushaya. N Shivdas, president of Konkani Lekhak Sangh and Patil of Matrushaya will be present.
Work on NH-17 widening at Balli begins
MARGAO: The authorities took up the long-pending work of widening of the national highway at Balli along the accident-prone sharp turns at Pattem, as land owners volunteered to offer the land for the project.
The sharp turns responsible for dozens of fatal accidents over the years was taken up for road widening after local MLA Rajan Naik approached the land owners, including Swami Vidyadhiraj of Partagal Mutt, Balli Communidade, the Kakode family and Vithoba Dessai.
As work on the road widening and lifting of mud began this morning in the presence of District Collector, N D Agrawal, the land owners and senior traffic and police officials, MLA Rajan profusely thanked the owners for sparing their land for the road widening. “It was because of support and cooperation of the land owners that the road widening will become a reality within three days. It will give a big relief to motorists as accidents on the sharp turns have claimed many lives,” Rajan said.
Plea to stop illegal sand extraction
MARGAO: A resident of Curtorim Domnic Pacheco has called upon the Chief Minister and other authorities to put a stop to illegal sand extraction and filling of khazan land at Corjuem ward in Curtorim village.
Pacheco said that sand is being extracted from the river bed in a haphazard manner, causing great environmental destruction. “The day and night traffic of trucks on the internal roads of the ward is causing great hardships to the local citizens, who are silent only on account of fear,” he said.
He pointed out that the illegal sand extraction is carried out in violation of mining laws, CRZ and other environmental laws, supreme court orders and the stay ordered by the National Green Tribunal, while demanding that the illegal filing of the khazan land should not only be stopped forthwith, but the land be restored to its original condition.
Ticketgate hearing adjourned again
MARGAO: Trial in the sensational 2011 fake cricket ticket gate case had to be adjourned yet again by the Judicial Magistrate First Class Margao as three witnesses summoned today failed to attend the hearing. The next date is October 11. Of the three witnesses summoned by the court, one Randall Fernandes is believed to have expired.
Judge Pooja Kavlekar ordered that warrant be issued against the witness for their failure to attend the court for Thursday’s hearing.
One held for assaulting constable
MARGAO: Maina-Curtorim police on Thursday arrested Reagan Cardozo of Orgao, Loutolim, who was wanted by Ponda police in a case of assaulting a police constable on duty. According to PI Gurudas Kadam, Cardozo was found by Maina-Curtorim moving around in Loutolim on a two-wheeler. When he was chased, he crossed the Borim bridge and tried to run away by leaving his two-wheeler. Constable Faiyaz Sheik, who tried to nab Cardozo, was bitten by the latter on his hand before fleeing away. On Thursday, the patrolling police found Cardozo at Loutolim and arrested him. An offence for assaulting a government servant on duty was registered against him by the Maina-Curtorim police.
Woman duped by ‘cops’
OLD GOA: A woman was duped by persons posing as policemen into parting with her gold chain worth Rs 45,000 at Cabesa, St Cruz, on Wednesday.
In a police complaint, Laxmi Mane of Gadhinagar-Bambolim complained that the incident took place at about 11 am when three persons posing as policemen persuaded her to part with her gold chain.
Old Goa Police has registered the case under Sections 170, 419, 379 r/w 34 IPC and PSI S Sawant is investigating the case.
Search on for juvenile
PANJIM: Police are searching for a juvenile, who was allegedly kidnapped by unknown persons on the evening of September 30.
Omprakash Vishwakarma, a native of Uttar Pradesh has lodged a complaint with the Panjim police station alleging his 13-year-old son Pardum Ajay Vishwakarma has been kidnapped from Dona Paula.
Police have registered a complaint and investigation is on to trace the whereabouts of the kidnappers and to bring back the child safely.
Three flats ransacked
PANJIM: Burglars have struck once again and ransacked three flats at government quarters at Bhatlem and looted over Rs seven lakh. Ironically, one of the quarters belongs to a lady head constable of Goa police.
While Ashok Raut has complained that burglars decamped with gold jewellery worth Rs 55,000, Albino Carvalho – whose wife is a police official – claimed that goods worth Rs 6.87 lakh were stolen. Another residential quarter was also burgled.
Police said the robbery has taken place between 6 pm of September 1 and 7 am on September 2. According to the complaints, the latches of the main doors were cut. The finger prints experts have collected evidence from the crime spot while the Panjim police conducted a detailed panchanama.
The investigation team suspects it could be the handiwork of an organized criminal gang and the modus operandi of robbery gangs are being studied to nail on the culprits. Cases have been registered against unknown persons.
Cops on lookout for accused
PANJIM: Goa Police are on the lookout for an unknown male-female duo for allegedly assaulting a woman pedestrian in an attempt to snatch her mobile phone. The incident happened in day light near Kala Academy on October 2. The complaint has been filed against an unknown male rider and female pillion rider of black colour Pulsar motorbike. Police said they are investigating the case.
TN native arrested
CALANGUTE: A native of Tamil Nadu was arrested by Calangute Police on charges of attempting to burgle a house at Donvaddo, Saligao on Thursday.
According to Calangute Police, the accused, Ganesh Gopal Nadar, broke open the main door lock with the help of a pickaxe and entered the house at around 10.30 am.
Locals noticed him and latched from the outside and alerted Calangute Police, who rushed to the site and nabbed the accused. Yvonne Vaz later filed a complaint with Calangute Police.
