The drama, being enacted by Goan politicians, almost on the eve of Assembly elections, is presently on, with many of them displaying now their true colours in a show devoid of any morality or character. This crisis of character had perhaps first surfaced in Goa, around 60 years back and this is possibly the celebration of its Diamond Jubilee, with some of my fellow Goans having perfected by now the art of changing their colours like chameleons
In a democracy, everyone has the right to his/her views and to belong to one Party or the other or not to any. However, what seems beyond one’s comprehension is not the change of Parties, but the switching from one Party to another with totally opposite ideology. There could be cogent reasons why someone quits a Party and neither the Party nor anyone else has the right to question one’s decision, however unjustified it may be. But everyone has the right to judge or suspect that other considerations have weighed when someone quits to join another party with contrary ideals. And such despicable behavior has been seen in Goa, ad nauseam and is becoming a common occurrence in recent months. And yet, there are many people who will clap for such unworthy and characterless individuals, just because they hate the Party which has been ditched. Sad that these cheerleaders do not realize how this attitude reflects on their own character.

An anti-incumbency wave seems to be sweeping Goa and yet we see a few people, who had toed this line of thinking, now shifting to ruling side, surely due to some profitable considerations.
When all attempts at unity of Opposition seem to have failed, some last minute efforts are on at alliance or support of few like-minded parties. While his could be a welcome move, there are people strongly opposed to it, as they are skeptic about the eventual outcome of such alliance. They may be right, but if only support is assured and no alliance exists, post-election commitment cannot be assured and we may land up in a situation similar to the one in 2017. If an alliance is struck, those opposing it, may put up someone to divide the votes and if alliance does not go through, many candidates will be propped up to spoil the chances of the Party’s probable ones. This is a tricky situation which needs to be tackled with much caution and prudence.
Recently, an upright and qualified gentleman, joined a national Party and is likely to be its candidate in one important constituency in South Goa. Surely his past record in taking up forcefully many issues concerning Goa and his popularity among the people particularly in his constituency, are a great asset to the party. It is to be hoped that induction of such an outstanding individual will be a turning point for the Party, which unfortunately has not much to boast about its performance in Goa, and it will put up honest and unblemished candidates so as to totally erase its unworthy past record in Goa.
