The BJP government in collaboration of a few self-centered people from Saligao is currently hell-bent on setting up a controversial Garbage Treatment Plant (GTP) atop the Saligao-Calangute plateau and officially turning our beautiful village into permanent garbage dumping site for the coastal villages of Calangute and surrounding areas.
The residents of Arrarim in particular have been silently suffering from this garbage problem as trucks filled with tonnes of garbage from these neighboring coastal areas have been daringly trespassing almost every day into our Saligao village despite the court directives and irresponsibly dumping the same right atop the same site since the last so many years and in the bargain threatening our wells, plus the famous Salmona spring from long-term pollution.
Many eminent people from Saligao have been rightly fighting over the years in Court to stop the people from these neighboring coastal areas from dumping their garbage atop the Saligao-Calangute plateau and trying to save the environment, which includes the Salmona spring. Unfortunately, the present government in collaboration of a few selfish people from the coastal areas seem to be hell-bent on going ahead and making the same Saligao-Calangute plateau into a permanent garbage dumping site with the setting up of its so-called ‘Garbage Treatment Plant’ thereby planning to destroy our beautiful village of Saligao (especially Arrarim area) one’s for all.
Calangute currently practically generates 80 tonnes of garbage and there is every possibility that the same will surely go up to 100 tonnes by the time the plant is set up. Which means that the said plant is definitely not being set up for the benefit of the Saligao people but for the benefit of all the shack owners, hotels, bars & restaurants, guest houses from the coastal villages of Calangute and surrounding areas.
