Ajinkya Rahane’s retirement has left Kolkata Knight Riders facing another leadership dilemma ahead of their IPL 2027 planning. After losing Shreyas Iyer following their 2024 title-winning campaign, KKR had relied on Rahane for stability. His retirement has once again forced the franchise to search for an experienced Indian leader.
According to multiple reports, KKR have identified Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya as their preferred target. However, Kolkata are not alone in the race, with seven of the 10 IPL franchises reportedly making preliminary inquiries about the all-rounder.

Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants are among the teams understood to have shown interest. Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, have maintained that no decision has been taken regarding Pandya’s future.
Pandya’s underwhelming 2026 season
Pandya’s future has come under greater scrutiny following a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign. Retained by Mumbai Indians for ₹16.35 crore, he scored 206 runs in 10 matches at a strike rate of 138.25 and claimed four wickets.
Mumbai endured one of their poorest seasons, finishing ninth with only four wins. The franchise has confirmed that a detailed review of its campaign is ongoing.
Despite those numbers, Pandya remains one of the most experienced Indian all-rounders in the league and has previously captained India in all three formats. His leadership experience and ability to contribute with both bat and ball make him an attractive proposition for teams seeking an established Indian leader.
CSK and Delhi also in the race
Chennai Super Kings have reportedly emerged as one of the strongest alternatives to KKR. Reports suggest CSK could offer Shivam Dube, West Indies prospect Dewald Brevis and ₹10 crore in cash.
However, Chennai are reportedly reluctant to part with young batter Ayush Mhatre, whom Mumbai have shown interest in. CSK also already have Ruturaj Gaikwad as captain, while Sanju Samson was brought in to strengthen their leadership options.
Delhi Capitals offer a different possibility, with reports suggesting Axar Patel could be considered as part of a potential trade. Axar would provide Mumbai with an experienced Indian all-rounder, a quality left-arm spinner and a reliable lower-order batter.
Lucknow Super Giants are reportedly prepared to make the biggest financial offer, with a package worth ₹25 crore along with the captaincy. However, they are currently considered the least likely destination.
Mumbai Indians yet to make a decision
The biggest uncertainty remains Mumbai Indians’ position. The franchise has repeatedly stated that its post-season review is still underway and that no formal decision on trades has been made.
Pandya’s future is also linked to wider questions surrounding Mumbai’s squad structure. Reports have previously raised uncertainty over Suryakumar Yadav’s future, while Tilak Varma has been discussed as a potential future captain.
For KKR, however, the situation is straightforward. The franchise needs a proven Indian leader before IPL 2027, and Pandya fits that profile.
Whether Mumbai are willing to release their captain remains the biggest unanswered question. For now, Pandya remains a Mumbai Indians player, but his name has already become one of the biggest talking points of the IPL 2027 trade window.
