Memories of bygone days are a treasure that no one can steal. Memories of heroes who have died are remembered on this Globe.
Dr Jack de Sequeira is known in Goa as the Father of the Opinion Poll, because he played a pivotal role to decide the issue of rejecting the merger of Goa with Maharashtra. Goa’s first Chief Minister, Dayanand Bandodkar, though initially, was for the merger; he respected the people’s verdict and toiled with a vision and passion towards the all round development of Goa.
Sri Aurobindo was imprisoned for writing against the British colonial rule in India and for spreading the message: “Our ideal of Swaraj is absolute autonomy, absolute self-rule, free from foreign control.” Therefore, he was imprisoned and in jail, he dreamt the dream of his future life, the divine mission ordained for him by God which was something much wider and deeper than the country’s freedom. So, he stepped out of the Freedom Struggle with the message that the nation must wait for the “God-sent leader” who will mobilise people to liberate the country. And a decade later, Gandhiji emerged as a leader.
Mahatma Gandhi gave a strong mantra: “Do or Die” (Karo ya maro). His words gave an extraordinary force to the nation movement.
Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri coined the famous slogan: “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan,” which suggests the importance of farmers and soldiers in nurturing and protecting the country.
Jayaprakash Narayan urged the students of Bihar to rise against corrupt political institutions; he appealed to them to give away one year of their life and sacrifice it to the cause of peaceful total revolution.”
Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, remarked, “I feel it is workable, it is flexible and it is strong enough to hold the country together both in peace time and in war time. Indeed, if things go wrong under the new Constitution, the reason will not be that we had a bad Constitution. What we will have to say is that Man was vile.”
At the inaugural address of Abraham Lincoln, one man stood up and said, “Lincoln, you should not forget that your father used to make shoes for my family.” The whole Senate laughed on hearing this. But Lincoln said, “Sir, I know that … I ask, have you any complaint? I can make another pair of shoes; because I know how to make shoes, myself!” The whole Senate was struck dumb.
Despite the victory achieved by Emperor Ashoka at the Kalinga war and the success of Albert Einstein’s formula for making the atom bomb, both were not happy; because their triumph contributed towards destruction of mankind instead of doing, good for humanity. Emperor Ashoka pledged never to fight another war in his life time. Albert Einstein said, “Try not to become a man of success but a man of value.”
Memories, of our near and dear ones who have passed away flash before us in the bliss of solitude; we sense their presence, their smiles, their glint of anger, their glow of happiness especially, on Dia da festa; how with love and care they prepared Sanna vode festache. Yes, deceased persons are not dead; they are alive in our mind.
No one can forget past Memories
