Rape is a dirty word and across the world it is dealt with stringent punishment for the rapist ranging from death penalty, chemical castration and life imprisonment. Arab world deals firmly with rapists with death penalty. It is the worst mental torture the victim undergoes which often leads to depression and rape victims suffer for life and are ostrocized in society.
Supreme Court sealed the judgement of the Nirbhaya case with death penalty for all the accused. The verdict was welcomed by the parents of the deceased paramedic and by most sections of the society. The Judges of the Supreme Court were themselves satisfied in delivering such a judgement as they found the lady was treated like a toy and termed it as brutal and demonic crime.
This is a case of one Nirbhaya who was brutalised, raped and died on December 29, 2012 in a Singapore hospital. But thousands of rapes are taking place in India in spite of Presidential Decree “Criminal Law Amendment Ordinance 2013” Rapes are taking place every day in India and many rape victims have been done to death across India. Foreign nationals on a holiday have been raped and murdered in various parts of India and even in Goa. When a rape and death of a foreign national takes place in India, the concerned government of foreign national take up the issue seriously with the PMO or with the President’s Secretariat the reason being every foreign national enjoys certain Fundamental Rights even on foreign soil and it is the duty of the Indian Government to protect these rights. The Government of India then directs the concerned state government where the rape has taken place and orders a magisterial enquiry the report of which is submitted to the government of the raped and deceased foreign national.
But in spite of thousands of rapes and hundreds of deaths of rape victims why is the Government of India not initiating stringent punishment for rapists. The duty of any government is to rule according to the Constitution and uphold its basic tenets: JUSTICE – LIBERTY – EQUALITY – FRATERNITY.
The Government of India has to take up radical reforms to ensure Justice and Liberty to make women’s life more safe and secure.
