Reforming democracy: need of hour

We live in a country where there are multiple diversities associated with religion, caste, race, Class, etc. These factors not just influence our routine life but also out political choice. Recently we have seen a elections full of communal agenda placed in front of people rather then as a society fighting for  basic needs such as unemployment, poverty, literacy, corruption, child labour and many more. Polarisation was seen to the best with use of religion as a main tool.
Democracy as stated “of the people”, by the people , for the people, is the best system known for  governance today.
But wait a minute, today’s political entities have been successful in using the loop holes in the so called finest system of elections. Equal voting rights, may have made democracy a right choice even though it may have shortcomings. Recently elections have seen around 70 percent voting and a party with majority has secured around 35 percent voting which means if we consider this for overall population of country, it comes to around 20 percent or less. That means a majority government if formed by consent of just 20 percent of entire country and 80 percent either don’t want or haven’t poised their opinion.  So how can this be called a healthy percentage?  How can you call this verdict as people’s?
Votes are divided into religion, caste, region, fame etc. and political parties have used people’s emotions at its maximum to exploit their concerns. Divide and rule may be policy learnt by our heavyweights from ancestors  (Kings, rulers, British etc.).
When we elect a government, our assets and resources are at stake. Why can’t we have pre- qualifications for contestants wherein they need to prove that they are eligible to handle our resources and governance. Even before appointment of a small clerk or a person for a job, we take immense care that a wrong candidate is not selected then why put our national treasury at stake? If we can have rounds for even small contests or games, then why not elections stage wise. May be we may have to incur a little extra cost but this will ensure a cadre who is the choice of masses. Whatever the reforms may be, we need to act. I have just suggested a start but to move forward we need people’s attention. We need better policies for our society. Mere elections are not enough even new laws , regulations are needed on humanitarian grounds and not just few ideologies.
