This has reference to your Editorial ‘Time for India to consider other sports and not just cricket’ (Herald, August 9). Who does not love sports nay admired by all among all other activities? Nothing can be a proud moment for a sportsperson than to participate in the Olympics in one’s life time, another issue winning or losing. Due to pandemic spread, Tokyo Olympics 2020 was held in 2021 and concluded on 8th instant after 17 days. Three hundred and thirty-nine events, 33 sports disciplines, more than 11,000 athletes. Without noise but with laurels and defeats, silent challenging Tokyo Olympics will be recorded in history.
Many nations may have won good number of medals, India with a total tally of 7, 1 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze medals. Need not to be ashamed but we have to improve, will certainly do in next Olympics. Proud of our winners, no less of those who conquered hearts but defeated.
Every game needs to be strengthened as cricket in our country. We have to pick youngsters who demonstrate aptitude and merit and start training them in institutes. All States have the responsibilities to give utmost importance to sports activities for example Goa. Any discipline in sports limited by time and age, one cannot play for ever. Parents and society have to encourage those children who love sports and wish to be involved. These days girls and women are taking part, this an encouraging sign and a matter of pride. Boys and men must come in greater numbers. Sports Budget should be so wholesome whether of the Centre or the States as to cater for every need and requirement from providing good and nutritious diet, arrange best coaches for physical and mental training, creation of playgrounds, academia and stadiums and all incentives to upgrade disciplines and sportsperson.
One has to compliment Haryana for development of sports, encouraging sports lovers. Haryanis have excelled and been rewarded whether at the Commonwealth games, Asian games or in the recently concluded Olympics. No part of India should be left untouched; all parts have the potential to create a good sportsperson out of dust and poverty.
All sports have the promise and bright future. Those nations that have earned more medals at Tokyo have trained and fed their athletes well, provided them the best to excel with ease but hard work. In life, one does not achieve success through short cuts; only love, determination, grit, endurance. Hard honest work brings dividends.
Goa must strengthen sports as many other States to bring out the talented.
Those who have honoured themselves and the nation, those whose hearts rejoiced are the real treasures of India. They should be given a rousing welcome by all. The Sports Authority of India, the Central and State Government, corporate houses from their CSR can do a lot to improve quality of sports and sports associated manpower, spirited young men and women have the power to transform little selves and the nation. The concerned must identify players’ problems and difficulties, the players must give their very best. Games will definitely bring wonder and pride, will unite India as never before.
