Technology has taken A quantum leap

These days one sees frequent news items about villagers opposing Cellular towers in their villages.

The arguments are clique and, to someone who has stayed abreast of the technology, these are dated too. All these antagonists own a cellphone, by the way because with so much online transactions being the nor , one cannot do without a mobile to receive the OTP or confirmation SMS. Every government application needs a mobile number to be given. Therefore it is established that mobile coverage is imperative to function nowadays.
Herald dated September 20 carried opposite views. An excellent piece under People’s Edit by Nelson Lopes and a letter by James Moraes from Cuncolim with dated research quote of circa 1993. It may be realized that these articles would be based on earlier research data maybe of 1990. Without getting into the merits of these findings, it should be appreciated that technology has taken a quantum leap since then. The final clincher by Moraes was the disappearance of sparrows in the area. A more plausible cause could be the massive dump of toxic pollutants in the village. The very high power arc furnaces of the scrap smelting units in Cuncolim would be another plausible reason for sterile sparrows. Mobile transmission technology has progressed so much since .With new entrants, India is getting the latest. Hence the emission levels here are far less than USA, and  even more lower than in Australia which works on higher transmission levels since longer ranges are required unlike what the loud quacks at Gram Sabha were informing.
The opponents of Cellular towers do not factor that when signal is weak, the mobile firmly pressed on their ear increases its power drastically and that bechara is subject to exposure of 20 to 100 times the normal radiation from his own handset. There is a comparison about  how one can be cooked by tower radiation like in a microwave. To the mis-informed, microwave runs at 1000 watts, whereas a Cellular tower can generate a maximum of 20 watts.
Recently the Government had delegated experts to the Gram Sabhas, of doctors, independent telecom engineers from BSNL and Goa State Pollution Board. They were shouted down, not allowed to speak and questioned by Diploma quacks on their degrees. It is pointed out that these 2-3 hecklers in the Gram Sabhas all carried cellphones – the hypocrites. It is reported that even Dr Shekhar Salkar a top Oncologist, and eminently qualified to speak on cancer risks was heckled too. Doubt whether these unworthies even know what an Oncologist does.
