1,053 Balls of Mayhem: England Seamers Annihilate Pakistan in Headingley Express Match

England signaled the beginning of Joe Root’s second chapter as full-time Test captain with a clinical, relentless display at Headingley, tearing through Pakistan before tea on Day 3 to secure victory by an innings and 103 runs. Led by an unyielding four-man pace attack, the hosts bundled out Pakistan for a meager 135 runs in just 37.3 overs in their second innings. The swift conclusion meant the entire Test lasted merely 1,053 balls—tying for the second-fastest win of Root’s 66-match captaincy tenure.

Resuming the third morning at 366 for 8 with an already commanding 195-run cushion, England pushed their total to 409, stretching their lead to 238. Jofra Archer provided early energy with a breezy, unbeaten 23 off 25 balls before making quick work with the ball in hand. Pakistan’s second innings got off to a disastrous start as Archer found steep bounce to remove Imam-ul-Haq for a duck, gloves deflected into Jamie Smith’s gloves. Shortly after, Root’s imaginative captaincy paid immediate dividends when he posted himself at leg gully, catching Azan Awais off Archer for 9.

Abdullah Shafique and Shan Masood temporarily halted the procession with a 38-run partnership, but Ollie Robinson broke through by nipping one off the seam to catch Shafique’s edge, caught low by Harry Brook at second slip. Pakistan reached lunch precariously poised at 59 for 3, but the interval offered no reprieve as Josh Tongue turned the match on its head immediately upon resumption.

Tongue ripped through the middle order with a sensational three-wicket spell. Saud Shakeel was caught flicking loosely to Dan Lawrence, and on the very next delivery, Masood pushed at a length ball to give Ben Duckett a simple catch at first slip. Before his over finished, Tongue trapped Pakistan captain Salman Agha leg-before for a duck, leaving the visitors reeling at 76 for 6.

Robinson returned to action to match Tongue’s momentum, dismissing Ali Usman via a bobbling catch by Jordan Cox at third slip, and then removing Khurram Shahzad shortly after. Mohammad Rizwan offered late defiance with a sharp 41 off 39 deliveries, but his resistance was ended when he attempted an ugly cross-bat swipe off Gus Atkinson. Three balls later, Mohammad Abbas top-edged Atkinson to point to seal Pakistan’s fate.

Player of the Match Ollie Robinson (5/51 & 3/29) and Josh Tongue (5/46 & 3/43) finished with eight wickets each in the match, while Archer picked up 3 for 50 in the final innings. The seamers exploited helpful conditions with laser accuracy, supported by sharp slip catching and tactical field placings. Pakistan’s batting lineup failed to cope with the sustained pressure, succumbing to an overwhelming defeat in the opening encounter of the series.
