The Goa Police has been constantly advising the migrants staying in rented rooms to submit detailed information regarding their personal identity at the nearest police station. However, not all of them oblige to this request. With the ever increasing dacoities, murders, rape cases and other atrocities on women, police try their level best to nab the culprits. They have come to the conclusion that mostly migrants get involved in above types of anti-social behaviour. Under such circumstances, information given by migrants tend to be useful to police in expediting the investigation process. As a result, the movement of thieves and criminals get controlled.
I wonder whether the Goa Police has been visiting village areas to check the existing situation in this particular matter. Especially at the villages of Adpai and Durbhat, many migrants stay in rented rooms. Some are accommodated even inside the shops. I am sure that there will be many who have not yet submitted their self bio-data and other details at the Ponda police station. It is necessary for the Ponda police to undertake surprise visits at various villages around Ponda (especially during the night) to take stock of the prevailing situation and initiate strict action against those failing to register themselves at the police station. The local VP, viz the Village Panchayat of Durbhat should also approach such migrants and explain to them the importance of this matter.
Recently the South Goa District Magistrate has directed the police to file FIR’s on behalf of the state in case persons staying in rented accommodation do not provide their details at the police station. This is indeed a welcome step and would be an eye-opener to the migrant labourers. In case each and every person registers himself at the police station, it will ultimately help the police to undertake prompt investigation and nab the real culprits within no time.
Migrants who fail to obey this important requirement should be taken to task and dealt with an iron hand. It is absolutely necessary that tenant verification drive is carried out on regular basis.
