Deep down, most people today feel totally insecure. All we ever seem to hear is bad news, besides murder, terrorism abuse, the destruction of the environment, not to mention earthquakes, floods, hurricanes and tsunamis.
In the face of all this, feelings of insecurity and hopelessness are inevitable. Most of us today live in a state of suppressed despair, trying to find ways of distracting ourselves from the hard realities of our times.
In the past most people relied on the certainties and practices of their respective cultures, today all traditional cultures are slowly disintegrating there is nothing much left for people to hang on to. We are slowly sinking, our land too. A metaphor may help. We are like a giant Ocean liner that has come loose from its moorings and is drifting out to the sea. The danger ahead is incalculable. Are we heading for a ship wreck and extinction? Some want to return to the safety of the harbour, but that is no longer possible, others are too distracted that they are not aware of the fact that they are drifting….. We are all in this boat together. Blaming this one or that one is of no help in a situation like this. Nature is not hostile to us the storm is on board between the passengers, each blindly pursuing his or her own agenda. The dangers and threats remain.
The sixth extinct is the one we are already heading for now, only this time it’s unlikely to be caused by an asteroid smashing the earth, this time it will be the result of human selfishness, “who cares what happens” attitude.
We have been discovering new ways in which our earth and our species are dying. There has been some response to the warnings, but nowhere enough to stem the tide. It’s not about the future catastrophe, it’s about global warming. Creating a world powered on clean energy to save ourselves from climate catastrophe is a central challenge of our time and requires a revolutionary transition in our economies.
To survive the 21st century, we must discover the sense of common purpose that has driven revolutionary change through history, building a mass movement to stretch what our politicians believe is possible. We must lead, not follow, and bring leaders with us. All the nations need to cooperate on this one, Global Warming if not all will perish. We know what to do, but we lack the will to do it, why? Because we do not seem to be able to move beyond our short-sighted selfish interest and our individualism. We are so full of our selves. But this should not tempt us to give up any sense of urgency; the green house gas emission should be stopped now. The growing materialization of every aspect of life, calls urgently for a return to an individual awareness of all that is, and of the interconnectedness of all that exists.
Let not what happened in Chennai happen here in Goa. It wasn’t nature alone that sunk Chennai, it was a manmade disaster to a large extent.
Hold on!! Some hope some good news!
Nearly 200 nations adopted the first global pact to fight climate change on Saturday, calling on the world to collectively cut and then eliminate greenhouse gas pollution but imposing no sanctions on countries that don’t. Loud applause erupted in the conference hall outside Paris after French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius gaveled the agreement Saturday. Some delegates started crying. Others embraced.
The countries had been negotiating the pact for four years after earlier attempts to reach such a deal failed. May all this bring healing to our earth and let us hand over to our future generation and clean green earth It is all in our hands, each one of us are responsible no blame game.
