We are in the age of computers and supersonic where every happening has a reason and scientific explanation. But, silly superstitions, although considered to be foolish they are gulped down not only by lay person but also by highly educated heads. These knowledgeable men, if they try to avoid these irrational superstitions, they feel slightly uneasy about not doing or sticking to these age-old ridiculous beliefs.
Superstition is a belief in an effect on people’s lives. They are chiefly of two kinds:
a) Those that have come down to us from our ancestors and environmental background like for example: Ideas attached to objects like amulets and sacred threads wrapped around the arms, or wearing a birth stone to bring good luck; or protecting the bride from evil eye with the wedding veil; or some beliefs about animals as black cat if crossing your path brings bad luck; dogs wailing in the night indicate ill luck; and crow’s persistent cawing on the window sill indicates good news or the arrival of a guest. There is a superstitions based on number, such as the fear of number 13 because of the biblical account that Judas, the “betrayer” of Jesus, was the thirteenth person to sit down at “the last supper”. Many also believe that certain dates are lucky and certain days are unlucky, for example, the idea that house warming, journeys, laying foundation stone etc., should be done on certain days to have the “full” blessings of God.
(b) Those brought about by accidental luck or misfortune of one’s personal, intimate, private experiences and so the person reacts to them almost mechanically. For example, wearing a particular dress or ornament which had brought good luck on a certain occasion; then there is a tendency to repeat that dress or ornament but if costume found unlucky than it is cast into the fire or given to some poor; again money is not to be parted at night; some superstitions are cause by narrow-minded fears as — “bhaile” (non-Goans) are not to be trusted.
No doubt, there are countless cases of people who have experienced ‘bad luck’ as a direct result of failing to perform some sort of superstitious ritual. This is because of the subconscious mind’s power and the Law of Attraction.
The subconscious mind is like a storage room of experiences, beliefs, memories, situations, traumatic episodes and personal responses that get impressed within the subconscious. Our subconscious mind has a tendency to flash them before our eyes just to protect us from future harm. And the law of attraction works according to how we feel. Think positive, attract positive results. Feel happy and attract happy things. Think negative, attract negative results. Feel sad and attract sad things. In brief the Law of Attraction refers to the idea that what you focus on, you attract — good or bad superstitions.
We can free ourselves of false notions by defying, disobeying, rebelling, resisting superstitions and observe the result, e.g. If you are afraid of breaking a mirror then obtain a cheap mirror and break it and see the result. If this is done often, the subconscious mind will take an imprint and you will soon be able to distinguish between sense and nonsense of your crippling notions.
