In US election, we not only pay attention to parties fighting election but more importantly the nominees of Republican and Democratic parties. Somehow Indians are fascinated by the US elections and keenly follow each outcome right through the party’s primaries, conventions, nominations, public debates and eventually the election. We also follow the coverage given to election process by the TV channels, specially the televised debates involving the presidential candidates.
This election has generated great deal of interest on account of peculiar personal character of presidential candidates. Hillary Clinton a well-known woman, who has been First Lady for 8 years, Secretary of State for 4 years and an elected Congresswoman for several years. Donald Trump a brash billionaire and real estate magnate was also once a TV presenter. As it happens in every election each candidate is subjected to a very stringent scrutiny with no hold barred about their personal, private as well public lives and even that of their close relatives. Each candidate is expected to spell out openly their views, opinions, plans and policies they will implement after getting elected.
In this election both candidates are having plus points of varying degrees as well as quite a bit of negative baggage. Mrs Clinton has been accused by her opponents of using her private server for emailing and faces a serious charge of deleting tens of thousands of officials e-mails while she was Secretary of State. Also the conduct of her husband ex-president Bill Clinton’s and his involvement with some women in the White House, have raised moral and ethical behavioral issues. However her long experience of both national and international affairs and well laid down policies about US administration and issues related to public interest and its general benefits particularly child and family welfare to all Americans, weigh strongly in her favour.
Donald Trump a temperamental billionaire is in strong position financially and has been highly critical of the past and present administrations for their faulty policies both at national and international levels, which are mainly responsible for America’s gradual decline in every respect and lose its status as world’s only superpower. He promises to “make America great again” by stopping all jobs going out of US, stopping the entry of illegal immigrants especially Mexicans, not allowing entry of Muslims in the US etc. Whether these steps will really make America great again, it’s for Americans to judge.
However he has been making waves with his insensitive statements against women, whom he sees with jaundiced eyes except a few, who he thinks are beautiful and amenable to him. Of late his public standing has been receiving severe beating. His behavior and language towards them has earned him public ire and disdain, on account of which his chances of getting elected to the office of President have plummeted severely.
