The Winter Session of Parliament commenced on Monday and will run until December 19, marking one of the shortest sessions in recent years. Proceedings on the opening day were repeatedly disrupted in the Lok Sabha as opposition MPs launched protests alleging electoral malpractice. Raising slogans such as “vote chor, gaddi chod,” they demanded an immediate debate on the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across the country.
The repeated interruptions forced multiple adjournments throughout the day, with the House now scheduled to reconvene at 11 am on Tuesday. Ahead of the day’s proceedings, opposition parties are set to stage a demonstration at Parliament’s Makar Dwar, renewing their call for a discussion on electoral reforms.

A separate controversy also surfaced on Monday when Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury arrived at Parliament accompanied by her pet dog. Her comment drawing a comparison between the animal and parliamentarians—“Those who bite are inside Parliament”—triggered sharp criticism from the BJP, which termed the remark an affront to the dignity of the institution.
The brief session, spanning just 19 days, is expected to take up key issues including the SIR exercise, the recent explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort, and worsening air pollution in the Delhi-NCR region. The government has lined up 13 legislative bills and one financial bill for consideration.
Before the session opened, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation, urging lawmakers to prioritise meaningful dialogue over political showmanship. “For some time now, our Parliament has been used either as a warm-up arena for elections or as an outlet for frustration after defeat,” he said, calling for constructive and outcome-oriented debates throughout the session.
