1002 new COVID-19 cases in one day

PANJIM: The third wave of COVID-19 pandemic continues to wreak havoc in Goa. On Wednesday, at a infectivity rate of 17. 72 per cent, the State detected 1002 new cases- highest single-day spike in last seven months.

The State’s active caseload stood at 3,718 on Wednesday, which was at 535 until December 27. Within a weeks’ time almost 3200 new cases were added to the State’s total tally. 

The infectivity rate on December 25 was 2.19 per cent and climbed to 26 per cent on January 3. It dropped to 13.89 per cent on Tuesday, January 4 only to further rise to 17.72 per cent on Wednesday. 

 In last 24-hours, the infections doubled as Goa had registered 592 cases on Tuesday. However, there were only 13 hospital admissions for the day. 

It was in May, last year that State’s daily cases were above 1000.

State also has ten active omicron positive patients while one, an eight-year old has been discharged. 

It’s been almost 72 hours since Task Force on COVID-19 management recommended night curfew in the State. However, with election meetings, rallies, campaigns going on in full-swing, the Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, seems reluctant to impose any immediate severe restrictions to break the infection chain. 

The cases witnessed major spike in cities like Margao (481), Panjim (465) along with other urban areas mainly Porvorim (257), Mapusa (219),Vasco (188), Ponda (147). The health centres like Cansaulim (286), Chimbel (164), Siolim (162) also witnessed surge. 

The recovery rate has dropped from 97 per cent to 96 per cent, with only 46 people getting cured in last 24 hours. There has been also one fatality.
