PANJIM: The 108 ambulance employees who had threatened to go on an indefinite strike beginning January 7, have deferred their strike and will instead meet Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar at 9 am Tuesday and attempt to sort out their issues.
The workers union had passed this resolution in their first meeting after forming ‘108 Ambulance Service Employees Union’ under the banner Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (Goa) to address issues such as being made to work over time, being underpaid, demands for facilities like changing rooms and safety measures for women who are often made to work late hours and sometimes on night shifts. The union members have also demanded pay scale on par with government employees, paid holidays, dearness allowance, earned-casual and sick leave, payment for overtime and other facilities.
They had given an ultimatum to the government to meet their demands by January 7, which expires Tuesday, but the government hasn’t officially acceded to their demands.
The union of employees included around 120 employees which include pilots, emergency medical technicians among others.
