PANJIM: In all 12 asylums and centres of the Institute of Public Assistance (Provedoria) will undergo renovation in a bid to provide the inmates with livable conditions.
The asylums of Chimbel, Mapusa, Candolim, Loutolim, Majorda, Margao, Cuncolim and Chinchinim; and Victor Da Gama Retirement Home at Saligao and Recolhimento De Serra will undergo repairs to the roof, doors and windows, painting and fixing floor tiles. This was submitted as a reply by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on the floor of the House in response to a question asked by MLA Clafasio Dias.
The government, Parrikar further replied, has not proposed any new homes for the aged in the State so far.
Meanwhile, Chimbel Old Age Home has the maximum inmates – 81, male and female – followed by 45 in Margao and 27 in Cuncolim. The asylum of Candolim, Centre of Chinchinim and Victor da Gama Retirement Home have only male inmates while Recolhimento de Serra, and asylums at Mapusa and Loutolim have female inmates. The renovation work at Majorda home is already underway.
