PANJIM: The Traffic Cell of Goa Police will recommend suspending licenses of 16 motorists for jumping red lights after they were caught on day one of the week-long drive against traffic violations.
The drive, launched on Monday, is also zeroing in on violators of darkly tinted car windows and fancy registration number plates. SP (Traffic) Dinraj Govekar told Herald that 93 cases of tinted glass, 16 cases of red light jump and 203 cases of fancy number plates were booked on Monday.
“Licenses of those caught jumping the traffic signal should be suspended as per Supreme Court directives. As such, we will recommend to Transport Department to suspend licenses of such violators for a minimum three months,” he said.
The Traffic Cell has also intensified surveillance against drunken driving with all cases being sent to the court seeking imprisonment of the violators. The ongoing drive, since January, has seen 4,100 cases of drunken driving registered till September 24. The first eight months saw 127 violators going to jail while the fate of 1,126 cases is yet to be decided and 2,366 violators facing conviction but let off with a fine. The offences booked this year are nearly double than cases registered in the corresponding period of 2017, wherein 2,162 drunken drivers were penalised. Close to 150 alco meters have been allotted to local police stations and traffic police stations to crack down on the drunk drivers.
Govekar said they will further strengthen action against offenders of all traffic violations in the coming days, also as Goa is merely a week away from the new tourist season.
