VASCO: Mormugao Municipality has issued show cause notices to around 180 houses for discharging wastewater into drains and water bodies in the town. Municipal Chairman Nandadeep Raut has warned that strict action against such erring house owners.
Raut informed Herald that municipal workers have observed that “some houses are directly releasing wastewater and sewage directly into the drains and even into water bodies such as lakes.”
To solve this issue, Raut said, the municipality has issued show cause notices to 180 erring houses. “Such cases have been identified in my ward, too,” he said.
“Besides issuing show cause notices, we have also instructed these houses to immediately stop releasing wastewater into the drains. Of the 180 houses that have been issued show cause notices, 80 percent have replied with an undertaking to stop releasing wastewater into drains; and some of them have requested for connection of new sewerage line to their houses,” Raut added.
Recently, during an inspection of Baina lake, which is being used for aquaculture pilot project, the attention of Urban Development Minister Milind Naik was drawn to problem of contamination of lakes and drains in Vasco due to release of sewage and wastewater. Responding to this, the minister informed that he has given instructions to the chief officer to action in this regard.
