CANACONA: Barely a day after two youth from Canacona were killed in a road accident at Bendulem-Balli on Sunday, two residents from Sadolxem-Canacona were crushed to death by an inter-state truck at Karmalghat slope on Monday.
Menino Barretto (54) and Rocky Barretto (50) were proceeding on a two-wheeler (GA-09-C-7228) when the Margao-bound inter-state truck (KA-14-B-0659) fell on them.
According to police sources, the duo after completing their work at Margao was travelling home when the truck, overloaded with some heavy paper rolls, while negotiating a turn on Padi side of the treacherous Karmalghat slope fell on its side, crushing Menino and Rocky.
The impact was such that the rider and pillion were crushed, while the scooter was completely damaged.
Sources informed that no one could recognize them. The were later identified after police retrieved their identity cards including a driving license of one of the victims, eye witnesses revealed.
Canacona Police and fire brigade personnel rushed to the site and with great difficulty removed the bodies crushed under the rear end of the truck. The bodies were later sent to Hospicio morgue in Margao.
Cuncolim Police informed that the truck driver Pirsab Amirab of Shimoga was arrested for rash and negligent driving and a case registered against him for over loading. Cuncolim PSI Tukaram Chavan is investigating the case.
