CANACONA: In response to the appeal made by Jagrut Nagrik Samithi of Canacona to close the business establishments in protest and solidarity for the minor girl who was sexually assaulted by three construction site security personnel at Nagarcem, all the shop owners in Chaudi and surrounding areas voluntarily closed their shops during the second half of Tuesday.
With all of the over 300 shops and establishments at Chaudi and nearby Charasta remaining closed for the second half of Tuesday, the entire town of Chaudi wore a deserted look. The fish and vegetable vendors also joined in the bandh.
The office bearers of Jagrut Nagrik Samithi in the morning submitted a memorandum to the Canacona deputy collector, with a request to treat the rape incident as an eye opener wherein a six-year-old girl was sexually assaulted repeatedly over a period of two months.
The NGO members also asked to arrange a meeting of the concerned citizens of Canacona taluka with the higher police officials so that steps can be taken to stop this type of incidents from happening again.
Meanwhile, taking cognizance of many migrant workers staying in Canacona taluka without filing tenant verification forms, Canacona police rounded up 35 migrant labourers to verify if they have completed the necessary formalities.
Police said that this drive would continue till all the migrant labourers comply with the mandatory filing of tenant verification.
A report under Section 188 of CrPC in this regard is sent to the Collector for information, sources at Canacona police station said.
