38.45% voters turn out for Navelim ZP bye-poll

Bye-poll for the Navelim Zilla Panchayat witnessed a poor turn out of voters, with only 38.45 per cent of the electorate exercising their franchisee in Sunday’s polling.
Women outnumbered men as around 2791 female voters came out to cast their vote, while only 2231 males cast their votes.
Interestingly, the village of Navelim witnessed a turn out of only 30.60 per cent as against 56.83 per cent in neighbouring Sirlim-Dramapur village.
Returning officer for Navelim constituency, Johnson Fernandes said of the total electorate of 13060, only 5032 voters has cast t heir votes in today’s polling.
He said Sunday’s polling passed off peacefully without any untoward incident, adding that his office received no complaint either from the candidates or from the police about any violation.
Five candidates were in the fray for the Navelim bye-polls after the elections were countermanded following the death of candidate Hermino Fernandes. The candidates in the fray are Soccorro Fernandes, Agnelo Da Costa, Casmiro Vierra, Edwin Cardozo and Wilson Viegas.
Candidate Edwin told newsmen that the poor turn out would go in his favour, exuding confidence of winning the polls by a comfortable margin.
Meanwhile, the Returning officer has said that counting of votes will be taken up at the government multipurpose hall on Monday hall at 8 am.
