4 inmates lodged at Colvale jail freed

PANJIM: Four inmates lodged in Colvale jail were freed on the occasion of Republic Day as part of special remission of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebration.  

The Government of India, Ministry of Home Affairs had decided to celebrate the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav with a series of events to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of India’s Independence. As a part of the celebrations, the government decided to give special remission to certain categories of prisoners and release them in three phases, i.e. 75th anniversary of Independence, Republic Day and again on Independence Day 2023. Guidelines were issued and in first phase, one prisoner was released on the Independence Day 2022.

Four prisoners showing good behaviour while undergoing sentence in minor offences for short term and who have completed 66 per cent of their term and qualifying all criteria of guidelines were forwarded to the government. The government in its Cabinet meeting had approved four names and after consent of the Governor directed to release prisoners on the Republic Day.

They included Hassan Miya Mulla, Vinod Vithoba Khutkar, Sidalingapa Bisanal and Banner Keishing. These prisoners received their Release Certificate in the hands of IG (Prisons). 

Before releasing these prisoners, a counselling session was organised for them and their family members. 

Inspector General of Prisons Bosco George, IPS, congratulated all the inmates. The staff were awarded medals and certificates and gave message to these four prisoners not to see prison again in their life time.
